A LEGEND HAS PASSED
by Wayne Richards
It was to be an exciting night! Monday, July 28th! The first game of a three game series with Milwaukee. Neck and neck!
Things were looking great as the Cubs jumped out of the box with three runs. Then, the sad bulletin that Ryne had passed flashed across our tv screen with the somber voice of Jon "Boog" Sciambi breaking the news.
This athletically gifted man from Spokane, Washington always had a knack for sports. In addition to baseball, he excelled in basketball and football during his high school years.
It was actually on the gridiron that quarterback Sandberg captured attention having received "ALL AMERICAN" honors.
But, thankfully, he was embraced by baseball, making his debut with the Phillies in 1981. By 1982, he was displaying his powerful hitting and speed with our "MEN IN BLUE". That very same year, Ryne won the National League MVP.
What was actually more impressive than all the aforementioned stats is the fact that this soul was genuine. He is one of those amazing individuals who's spirit will fill Wrigley forever. We are all better human beings because of that!

OK FOLKS! IT’S AUGUST! FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS!

This is when we all feel as if we’re in a race. Actually….here’s the fun part. WE REALLY ARE!!!! Things are looking interesting (if not nerve-wracking) at the moment and based on the heart and soul of this team, some magic might happen! I love the spirit of this team and their determination to win!
I still crack up every time I see Pete Crow Armstrong run. It always looks like they’re speeding up the video. Yep! He sure can run! (His at bats...however.....well, you know.) That speed would be useful had Pete chosen to pursue football. He actually considers that to this day, but he’s on a great roll right now and I’m sure he doesn’t want to disturb that.
Anyway, the Cubs are amazing to watch this year! GO CUBS GO!

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

Do you have dreams? I dream often. In fact, I get most of my play writing ideas from dreams.
They also are very realistic. I can feel wind…hear voices…and even smell the air.
From time to time, I’ll meet somebody in a dream I think I know. They seem very familiar, but there’s some defining feature that is off a bit.
I wonder if whomever created this wonderful piece of art had a dream about Wrigley? But take a look! What’s wrong with this artist's rendering? Leave a comment below.

COOPERSTOWN COMES TO THE VILLAGES
by Dan Marx
65 members showed up for one of the most anticipated meetings in some time. Our featured speaker via zoom was Josh Rawitch, who is the president of the MLB Hall of Fame.
Josh started his talk with very sincere condolences for all of us, for one of our favorite players ever. Ryne Sandberg had just passed away a week earlier, and the pain was still very raw. Josh knew him well, and like Ryne, he played second base growing up.
Josh had just presided over the MLB induction ceremony for the newest inductees, Billy Wagner, CC Sabbathia, and Ichiro Suzuki. Ichiro was a particular favorite of Josh’s because in the last few years Ichiro had made 7 trips to Cooperstown. He came incognito each time, but wanted to totally immerse himself into as much of the artifacts as he could.
However, that could take years. There are over three million documents alone, and tens of thousands of artifacts that are rotated regularly among many of the exhibits in the hall. Josh was telling us a story of fans who want to donate items to the Hall.
When Josh first took over as president , one such fan wanted to donate a souvenir cup from the Cubs first night game in 1988. Josh thought that was pretty cool, until he found out that the Hall already has 3 of those cups.
Josh’s family was originally from Chicago, so he does have a soft spot for the Cubs. He did grow up, though, in LA, and was a fan of the Dodgers. He worked many years in the Dodgers organization and the Diamondback organization, until he became president of the Hall 4 years ago. He has almost encyclopedic knowledge of all of the 351 members of the Hall. During the induction ceremony last weekend, there were 52 living legends that were all individually introduced, and certainly brought back a flood of memories to me. Josh does live in Cooperstown and encouraged all of us to make another trip to the Hall. He asked for a show of hands, and it seemed like half of the room had visited the Hall before.
Josh had a Q and A session and answered many of our questions. It was a very educational and very enlightening evening experience for all of us. Thank you so much, Josh, for taking an hour out of your day to chat with us.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
byJack Herbon
The Chicago Cubs are preparing to embark on a road trip this week, and it includes a visit to another team in strong playoff contention. The Cubs, who currently sit in a National League wild card spot but trail the Milwaukee Brewers by four games in the National League Central, are hoping to gain some ground on a trip against the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays in coming days. How does the rest of their schedule stack up this season? Here are some key moments looming in the Cubs’ final 48 games of the regular season.
The series everyone has circled on their calendars will arrive on Aug. 18 when the Cubs welcome the Brewers to Wrigley Field for the final time this season. A five-game series will unfold at the ballpark over four days, giving the Cubs a pivotal opportunity to claw back ground they’ve lost to Milwaukee in recent weeks.
Aside from that series, the Cubs do visit the Toronto Blue Jays, currently leading the American League Central, Aug. 12-14 at Rogers Centre.
The Cubs end the season with a four-game road series against the Cincinnati Reds, then come home to take on the New York Mets, with both clubs currently in the wild card chase. Finally, the season ends with a three-game series against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
How many games do the Cubs have left against playoff teams?
The Cubs have 48 games left on the regular season, and of those 11 are against teams that are currently in playoff spots. That includes the five games against the Brewers, with three games remaining against the Mets at Wrigley Field and against the Blue Jays in Toronto. How does the Cubs' schedule stack up with other playoff rivals?According to Tankathon, the Cubs have the third easiest schedule remaining with only the Padres and Dodgers having easier roads to the finish line. The Brewers meanwhile have the sixth-toughest schedule remaining, having to play five different teams that are currently in playoff spots.
The Brewers have 17 games left against playoff teams down the stretch, including a three-game series against the Mets at American Family Field this weekend. They also have a road series at the end of August against the Blue Jays before coming home to take on the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies. Their last road series of the season is against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
So, as of this writing on August 8th for the Cubs World newsletter our team does seem to have an inside track to winning the division. I still think the Brewers are way over due for a bad streak of losing. Every team has them so let's hope their times has come!

A CELEBRATION FOR A GREAT MAN
by Wayne Richards
Earlier this year, we all lost an amazing man. For years, he enhanced every Cubs World membership meeting with his LET'S PLAY TOO presentation. He was a fixture. But more than that, he was a man with a big heart and we all felt it beating.
This coming August 24th (a Sunday) Laurel Manor will host JIM GULESERIAN-A CELEBRATION OF LIFE! This special event will take place from 10 am to 2 pm.
With Jim being involved in many different clubs in the Villages, you will see that he had many interests. But, make no mistake...his true passion was Cubs World.
This will me a memorable and important day. We hope you can stop by to attend this special celebration!

WHAT ABOUT BOB?
by Wayne Richards
Those of us who attended our zoom session with Bob Dernier might recall that during the Q@A session, I offered him the opportunity for our guest to sing “TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME”. I only offered because he announced during his presentation that he was scheduled to sing it at Wrigley. He turned the offer down. Shy I guess.
Anyway, there he was right on my big screen, bigger than life. Ah-1…ah-2…a3….and he wailed away in tune! He didn’t rush it. He didn’t botch it. In one word….AWESOME!
I’m sure Bob has run the gamut of emotions these past weeks,, especially with the loss of Ryne. They were very close friends.
I recieved a very nice e mail from Bob stating that he fully enjoyed the visit. So did we Bob. Do did we!

WATCH PARTY WELL ATTENDED
by Wayne Richards
Gators Restaurant in Brownwood has been host to our watch parties for some time and will continue to be into next year.
Many thanks to the fine staff for ensuring that we’re welcomed.
There was a very nice turnout on Sunday the 20th. Good food and drinks. Fine company…and….unfortunately a loss.
At this gathering, I was asked a few questions and I’d like to address them here. Just call me the answer man.
First, I was asked about where our CUBS banner was. Recently, Gators re-pained and fixed up some walls, including he area where we have our parties. The banners were stored away. Well...not exactly stored. They were piled up in a corner of the room. Our familiar banner was placed on top! (Perhaps an omen for this Fall?)
In any case, a suggestion has been made by our former president, Don Mulder, to have a larger CUBS WORLD banner made to display for all to see. Therefore, agreeing with that suggestion, I have initiated OPERATION BANNER! We will report on its progress.
Secondly, some folks have inquired as to if and when the games of chance will be in action. As soon as Sam Pagoria has a clear schedule, he will be gleefully tending to the games.
If you have yet to join us for these parties, you'll find them to be a great deal of fun and a great way to get to know fellow members. Come join the fun!!!!!!

THE PRESIDENT'S STATE OF CUBS WORLD ADDRESS
by Wayne Richards
My fellow Cubs World members...if you ever find me behind an actual presidential podium, I would recommend heading for the hills! As YOUR Cubs World president, I'm perfectly happy with the movable stand provided at Colony Cottage.
It is the responsibility of all presidents to report on the condition of the entity that they oversee. (It's not actually required, but I want to do this anyway.) I am happy to report that the state of Cubs World is in fine shape!
One of the reasons for this is due to the fact that I have an extraordinary board that tends to business riding the seas of responsibility liked skilled surfers.
Chuck Lindsoe, our official secretary of computers has done a stellar job for us working to ensure that our ZOOM system operates correctly. His skills have given us the opportunity to expand our guest horizons. In just a few months we've heard from Wayne Messmer in his basement, Bob Dernier in his car and Dolly Osburn from her hospital bed.
Just days after our zoom session, I received a letter from this wonderful woman thanking US for the opportunity to share her stories. "I love talking to baseball people!" she boasted.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the sad loss of Sue Zipay, a member of the Rockford Peaches. I am grateful for the times I have spoken to this amazing soul on the phone. Until falling ill, she had enough energy to light up an entire town!
Dan Marx, editor of the CUBS WORLD CHATTER, also serves as our media director and has been very influential in establishing our beautiful connection with the Daily Sun newspaper. He is very passionate about the game of baseball and that enthusiasm blossoms in his writing.
Rick Baas tends to our membership in many helpful ways. Any new or established Cubs World member who might have a question about registering issues is in good hands with Rick. He is alway accessible to everyone.
Our Iron Chef, Debra Shapiro, does a remarkable job serving up a variety of dinners during our membership meetings. From simple sandwiches to serving up delicious Chinese, Debra makes sure we are well fed!
Angela and Terrence Burke are quite a team and we're fortunate to have them. Terrence, my vice president, is an individual you will get to know better because he may be covering for me during upcoming membership meetings as host. He is also working on a project to create a new large CUBS WORLD banner to place on the wall of Gators. If that cannot happen, we will always find a place to hang it with pride.
Angela takes the most precise and well written minutes I've ever read! She is not afraid to share opinions and that is exactly the kind of thing that keeps CUBS WORLD special and ready to take on the future!
We all miss Jim Guleserian. His widow, Betty, joined the board when asked without any hesitation. She is going to bring an energy and freshness to our operation.
Our accountant and money guru is the one and only Sam Pagoria...another individual that answered the call for help! Sam will soon be tending to the games of chance featured at our watch parties.
Many thanks to GATOR'S who has hosted our watch parties and will continue to do so next year. You always make us feel at home.
Thank you to EPIC theatres for welcoming us for our movie nights. This, most likely, will become a regularly scheduled event! (Gotta get that real theatre popcorn!)
It was the great president, JOHN F. KENNEDY, who said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." That sentiment holds true with Cubs World. In order to keep growing and generate new ideas, WE NEED THE INPUT OF OUR MEMBERSHIP!
Any member of Cubs World is more than welcomed to attend a board meeting, which is held the third Monday of every month. All you need do is contact me and I'll place you on the schedule.
In conclusion let me state that I am extremely proud of our membership. We're a family. From now on, remember that if there is an empty chair at the Prez's table, come join us.
God bless Cubs World, God bless America and God Bless the Cubbies!!!!

HERE IT IS! YOUR CHANCE TO TELL US WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND! What our membership has to say is always important.
If you have any questions or suggestions, this is the place to do it! I'll be honest with you. Cubs World consists of a membership that are diversified and extremely interesting.
I especially love to talk on the phone with new members about how they became Cubs fans. Don't be shy. EXPRESS YOURSELF!
What do you folks think of the slogan I created? EVERY GAME COUNTS! It sure does in this second half.
Anyway, thank you friends for being the great folks that you are. We're proud to have you in CUBS WORLD!
