                             HAPPY JULY CUBS WORLD!

Here we are in July!  This has been an amazingly fast paced year so far.  Almost too fast!  I'm sure we're pleased and surprised to see that the Cubs are still clawing away!  Actually, they've been quite impressive.  We're all keeping our fingers crossed.  Maybe, our Cubbies can show us some real fireworks in the post season!

by Wayne Richards
For five years, our next ZOOM guest in August has been in charge of the famous BASEBALL HALL OF FAME in Cooperstown!  Josh Rawitch oversees a staff of nearly 100 which care for this extremely popular and important venue.
For 85 years, baseball has been celebrated here and Rawitch is working hard to direct things into the future!  He wants to make sure that history is preserved for generations to come.
There are technological additions constantly being added to these sacred halls.  14,000 hours of audio and video recordings are on display along with three million documents.  Have some time to explore?
We urge you to take the time to join us on Monday, August 4th as Josh Rawitch shares stories and insights into this special shrine.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DAN "The Man" Marx!
Many of you, including me, had never heard the name Josh Rawitch before. Josh is the President of the Major League League Baseball Hall Of Fame. Just saying that is magical. It gives you a feeling of awe just thinking of this hallowed museum where all of the greatest players that we witnessed growing up reside in bronze plaques. I was in Cooperstown, NY twice to see all of these legends. Each time I leave I have to pick up my jaw off of the floor. I took my son once and it definitely helped me explain to him who these players are.
It’s not only the players who we watched growing up, but it’s the Babe Ruths,  the Lou Gehrig, the Honus Wagners , Ty Cobb, Walter Johnsons, Christy Matthewson, just to name a few.
There are many ballplayers that we never heard of, but each one has his own story. There are thousands of pieces of memorabilia to observe in the Hall. Maybe Josh will have some stories about the more interesting memorabilia. Maybe Josh will have some stories about some of the Cubs that have been enshrined in the Hall. Maybe you might have a question about a HOF player that is one of your favorites.
I grew up in love with baseball, and I love it even more now. I have a feeling many of you are the same way. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to hear Josh speak. I can assure you that the other baseball fan clubs in The Villags will be jealous of us for having him. He will be speaking to us via zoom, so please have some of your questions planned ahead of time.
If you Google Josh and go to Wikipedia , you will see that he is a remarkable individual with vast baseball experience. In the only personal experience that I have with him. I will tell you that I corresponded with him twice. EACH time I wrote him, he got back to me the NEXT day. How many other busy executives would do that?
Please plan ahead and plan on enjoying the meeting.

FYI
by Dan Marx

In 1936 the first five inductees into the MLB Baseball Hall of Fame were Babe Ruth,  Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Arguably the 5 best baseball players to ever play the game.
As of now there are 351 members in the Hall of Fame. That includes 278 former major league players, 40 executives/pioneers, 25 managers and 10 umpires. By position there are 86 pitchers, 20 catchers, 28 first basemen, 20 second baseman, 19 third baseman,26 shortstops , 76 outfielders, and  3 designated hitters.
The last class elected was in 2025 with Billy Wagner, CC Sabathia, and Ichiro Suzuki. Ichiro was near unanimous with only one vote against him.
The Hall of Fame is located in the beautiful town of Cooperstown, NY. These 3 illustrious ballplayers will be inducted into the Hall  on July 27th this year. They are also joined by Dick Allen and the late Dave Parker who were elected by the Classic Baseball Era.
If you go to baseball hall.org, you will see a list of all living Hall of Famers, a roll call of past inductions, and introduction to the road to Cooperstown, a podcast telling you stories of the legends enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
This is just to whet your appetite for our August 4th membership meeting with Josh Rawitch, the President of the MLB Baseball Hall of Fame.
  Hope to see you there.

RED WORD GOTTA BE SOMEWHERE!
by Wayne Richards
Some lucky Cubs World member can win a gift card from Publix just by finding a word printed in red somewhere in this newsletter.
When you find the word and are finished jumping up and down with total excitement, write it down on a piece of paper and toss it into our special DRAWING JAR at the August membership meeting!  GOOD LUCK!

THE MOUTH THAT ROARED!
by Wayne Richards
Lee Constantine Elia, the man who melted a microphone during a post Cubs game rant has passed away after a long illness.  He was 87.
"I know I'll always be remembered as one of those guys remembered for the tirade. But I hope its a little softened now.  I hope there's some warmness over it now.  I hope they understand"
Mr. Elia, we all understand.  Passion is passion.  You were a highly apologetic true gentleman when you visited Cubs World a few years back.  We appreciate you....AND PRINT IT!!!!

CLASSIC FILM ENTERTAINS!
by Dan Marx

We had a very appreciative turnout for the private showing of A League Of Their Own Monday night July 7th at Old Mill theater. The 50 members saw the movie at no charge as a show of appreciation by the board for their support all year long.
The movie is based on the All American Girls Professional Baseball League which was in operation from 1943 -1954. Originally started to entertain baseball fans during World War II, it found legs on its own, and stayed in business when the soldiers came back after the war.
It was produced by Penny Marshall, and starred Tom Hanks and Geena Davis. It was the second time that I had seen it the movie on the big screen , but like many others I have watched it many times on tv while channel surfing. It was one of my favorite sports movies ever, and listening to reactions from other members, it was theirs also.

 A BEAUTIFUL CONNECTION!
 by Wayne Richards

Thanks to the dedicated work of my editor, Dan Marx, Cubs World has established a connection with our home town newspaper, the Daily Sun.  It is a bond that is placing CUBS WORLD in the kind of spotlight we deserve!
The journalist who has so beautifully shed light on our club is named Sylaisha.  She came early on movie night, took some photos , some comments from early arriving members.  Her schedule was very tight due to another story she had to cover.  But, she made the effort to come meet us in person and that is very much appreciated.
The question has been raised as to why the photos that were taken didn't wind up n the paper.  Here are some realities I can share from having worked as a corespondent for a suburban publication back up north.  My editor at the examiner called the shots!  If there isn't enough space to print, the photos won't make the cut.  Editors decide where and how your story is to be packaged.  If too long, it can be cut down.
ON THE SQUARES is the feature in the paper that Sylaisha has recently been assigned to.  Cubs World wishes her the very best as her journalistic career takes shape.  She is personable...talented...and a great asset to both this NEWSLETTER and The Daily Sun!

Topping our list of the most annoying baseball fans are New York Yankees fans. Our respondents also voted Yankees fans as the worst behaved and most arrogant of all teams’ fans, making them the worst fanbase out of the whole MLB.

A QUESTION FOR YOU FROM DAN MARX AND WAYNE RICHARDS
Welcome to our favorite corner where ideas are exchanged and lightning flashes wait in the clouds.  So...this will be a quick one!
After watching Pete Crow Armstrong perform lately, does it concern anybody that he seems to swing at anything thrown his way?  Yes..he can run like the wind and is a very decent fielder, but what about his "AT BATS"?
  Leave your comments below.
  WOW!  WAS THAT THUNDER?

BASEBALL ISN'T ALWAYS PRETTY!
by Wayne Richards
Bench clearing moments are a part of the baseball landscape, whether we like it or not.  So is profanity which often sparks brawls.
This year, Annie and I treated ourselves to the full MLB package.  It has been a great investment for several reasons.
First, as the national and American league races heat up,  its very cool to actually watch the race unfold in real time! You also learn quickly which announcers are objective and fair in their "Play by play" responsibilities.
Secondly, there seems to be a trend to have various players wear microphones as they play on the field.  They'll answer a slew of questions when they should be giving total concentration on the game.  Sometimes, they get confused and a little slip of the tongue will come forth to entertain the masses streaming in.
Actually, one doesn't even need to mic them up.  If you're good at lip reading, there is a feast of communiques transporting from one part of the field to another.  This may help you translate what they're really communicating.

THOUGHTS FROM THE PREZ
by Wayne Richards

With half the year written into the book of history, I can't help but think of a more up and down ride than 2025!  Fortunately, at the moment , our Chicago Cubs are enjoying much success as ALL STAR TIME and I know our C ubs World family are praying hard that they maintain their course.
This was the year we lost Jim Guleserian.  I'd like all Cubs World members to keep in mind that a very special "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" will be held in his honor at Laurel Manor on Sunday, August 24th from 10 am to 2 pm.  We will send out reminders.  The event will include members from other clubs Jim has been involved with.
On a happier note, our Zoom sessions have worked better than we anticipated...thanks to the hard work of our computer guru, Chuck Lindsoe.  The membership reaction has been quite positive!  After all, where else but Cubs World can you see Wayne Messmer in his basement, a women's baseball hero in a resting home and Bob Dernier in his car?  I can't wait to see what the future brings!
Our good friend Kyle Farnsworth has moved to Georgia and I have kept in touch with him.  Just to let you in on a little secret...every time Annie and I go to Portillos in Clermont, I send him a photo of a beef sandwich.  I think it's one of my definite goals in life to get him to devour one.  Here's the kicker!  On the most recent photo delivery, Kyle answered, "I have to admit.  That looks much better than this fish sandwich I'm having."
I've been enjoying chatting on the phone with new potential members.  I love the way they so enthusiastically inquire about our club and I admire those individuals who are eager to lend a helping hand in our operations.
One thing our membership should keep in mind is that we invite everyone to join us at board meetings.  All you need do is inform yours truly that you'd like to attend via cubsworld.org.
I'll leave you with a little funny exchange I recently had with a fellow club member.  I jokingly suggested that Cubs World should hold watch parties at the new Hooters.  He asked, "What would we watch?"  I answered, "Selected shorts!"
By the way...speaking of Watch Parties, out next one will be on MONDAY the 21st of July.
Watch for e-mails sent every Monday over most of this same internet.
We're jumping into the second half of the season.  KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!!!!  GO CUBBIES!!!!!!
