Well! Here we are! It's time for regular season play. Or, is it irregular season play with the crazy schedule set up for this year along with the new rules?
So? How do you think we'll do this year? I've read predictions that we might win the division! Other professional analytical sources paint a much bleaker picture.
We'd like to know what you think!

SPEAKER TO VISIT US IN MAY!
(Bio...courtesy of Gary Koka)
Former Chicago Cub farmhand, infielder Matt Matulia, will be the guest speaker at the May CubsWorld meeting. Matt was drafted by the Cubs with the 24th round by the Cubs.
For the next five years, 2006-2010, he played for four different Cub minor league teams: Boise of the short season rookie league, Daytona Beach in Class A, Tennessee in AA, and the Iowa Cubs in AAA. His minor league teammates included future Cubs Jeff Samardzija, Tyler Colvin, Starlin Castro, Wellington Castillo, and Jim Adduci.
In addition, his managers and coaches included Jody Davis and, in spring training, Ryne Sandberg. Matt continued coaching after his playing career ended. One of the players he coached is current Detroit Tiger outfielder Kerry Carpenter.
Don't miss a chance to listen to this talented individual!

Welcome to our corner where everyone can speak their mind. We pose a question and invite your comments.
This month, the Chatter would like to know what kind of Cubs memorabilia do you have in your possession? Perhaps you have boxes of baseball cards, old score cards, signed photos, signed baseballs, old Cracker Jack boxes or other knick knacks?
Let's have some fun with this special "show and tell". Whether proudly displayed or hiding in an attic, share your items with Cubs World! We always love hearing from you.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Herbon
Here are the top three players the Cubs need to perform if they want to make the playoffs this year:
DANSBY SWANSON - The Cubs prize in free agency, Dansby Swanson. Signing him will greatly improve the offense and defense of this team. Not only that, but the Cubbies may not have had an electrifying shortstop since Javier Baez. The only, but major difference, between Baez and Swanson, is that Swanson is consistent at the plate and in the field. Cubs fans should be extremely happy about the Swanson signing and watching him play along with Hoerner at 2nd will be lights-out.
NICO HOERNER - Hoerner is moving back to his original position at 2nd base. His defense up the middle with Swanson should be amazing, possibly one of the best duos in MLB. Hoerner is coming off the best season of his 4-year career, so as long as he can stay off of the Injured List, he should vastly improve once again.
JUSTIN STEELE - Justin Steele is going into the 3rd season of his career, where he improved a lot from 2021 to 2022. Steele is likely going to be the 3rd pitcher in the rotation, just behind Marcus Stroman and Jameson Taillon, and this is a perfect spot for the developing pitcher. In 2022, Steele finished with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.353 WHIP in 119 innings. With the additions the Cubs have made this offseason on offense, the pressure for pitchers should decline slightly. Steele will soon be a top pitcher in this organization.
My sleeper pick for 2023 is still in the minors and did not make the opening day lineup. Watch and see Christoper Morel get called up sometime in May. It only takes one under performing player for this move to happen. Morel can play multiple positions much like Kris Bryant did when he played for the Cubs. He is multi talented and so far he has been playing hot in Iowa.
By the way I'm already looking forward to another view party at the Live Oak Church. That was a so much fun and the sound and picture quality of the broadcast probably surprised many of us who attended. Just imagine watching a playoff game there in October!

A GLORIOUS OPENING DAY
by Wayne Richards
An hour before game time, Dansby Swanson explored the "friendly confines" with his eyes...taking in its wonderful vistas. Little did he know that within a short amount of time he would become the first player to have 3plus hits in his debut since Nico Hoerner's debut in 2019.
Meanwhile, in the villages, people arrived early at the beautiful grounds at LIVE OAKS CHURCH. This would be the earliest opening day at Wrigley on record.

Meanwhile, in the villages, people arrived early at the beautiful grounds at LIVE OAKS CHURCH. This would be the earliest opening day at Wrigley on record.

While Cubs fans at Wrigley prayed that the sun might grace their seats in 48 degree weather, Cubs World members enjoyed the perks of a "watch party" under warm blue skies. After dropping off a contribution of non-perishable food goods as requested by the church, people bought 50/50 tickets and purchased chances for the usual selection of games.
Don Mulder welcomed the masses followed by a greeting from Bob Page (associate pastor)who led everyone in a rendition of 'TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME" and "GO CUBS GO", with an assist from yours truly.

At Wrigley, vendors hawked Chicago style dogs while at the same time, the inviting aroma of popcorn filled the Live Oaks compound. A mystic Ice Cream truck offered a number flavors. It wouldn't surprise me if someone were to admit that while enjoying the ice cold confection, their memory senses took them back to the days of FROSTY MALTS.
As with any opening day, hopes are high for a great season ahead. The giant church screen was filled with images that pleased the enthusiastic masses! This was a good solid, fast moving game with positive results!

It was great to see Stroman go six innings and strike out eight. Defense looked great behind him, highlighted by a great play by Patrick Wisdom.
It was also nice to see four runs produced in the third inning, although it took a bit to accomplish with three hits, two walks and an error by the Brewers.
The bull pen came through also with Boxberger, Thomson and Fulmer producing three scoreless innings. One gets the sense after watching this game that there are signs of real improvement with the Cubs. If what we saw on the blessed screen of Live Oaks is any indication of things to come, this is going to be wonderful season.
All too soon, the afternoon slipped away, the grounds turned silent and a Cub victory was in the books. By the way, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the wayward pieces of popcorn scattered around on the grounds were quickly picked up by birds, just like the daily late afternoon scavengers at Wrigley!

APRIL MEMBERSHIP MEETING REPORT
by Dan Marx
Over 90 Cubs World members were reminded that baseball season was officially here with our annual rite of spring, a visit by Cody Hills. Cody, of course, is the Daily Sun award winning sports reporter who is a proud Chicago Cubs fan.
Growing up on a farm in Iowa, he made the right decision in cheering for the Cubs when all of the rest of his family were Cardinal fans. Cody is such a great friend to Cubs World, as he has penned many great articles about our club. This includes a front page ( front section) article when we shared the spotlight with a new Clemson fan club 6 years ago. We were also new at the time, and the story came out before the start of the season. This put our club on the map, and we got dozens of new members because of the exposure. Many thanks again, Cody.
Cody started by going over the new rules that are being introduced this season. With the game being shortened by at least 20 minutes, he was all in favor of that. He knows how important these changes are, because we need to tie in the younger generation. TV viewership has been going down for years. Offense has been going down also, but Cody pointed out that in the first weekend alone, the major league average went up ( for that same time period ) from .230 to.245.
He then pointed out an astonishing statistic. Marcus Stroman and Justin Steele were the first Cub pitchers to start a season with back to back shutouts since 1906 !!!
Cody likes the moves that have been done by management. He thinks that we are a very athletic group and thinks that many of our new acquisitions are going to make a big impact. He thinks a .500 season is in order.
Jim Guleserian was very disappointed that his Let’s Play Too segment was cut short by technological glitches. We were hoping to hear “ Its a beautiful day for a ballgame “ Centerfield, and James Earl Jones’ soliloquy from Field of Dreams.
And, oh yes, that Metro Diner driver from our March 6th meeting was finally able to locate Colony Rec center. It was well worth waiting for.
Our last speaker was Steve Barton, president of Gatorball. Steve , a UF baseball standout, he started Gatorball in 2006. At the moment, Steve and his helpers are managing 800-900 players to help them advance as far as possible up the ranks. Many of these players have severe financial burdens and any financial support is greatly appreciated. Many of these players are actually being recruited starting in the 8th and 9th grade. And, there have been 11 players from The Villages High School that have advanced to higher levels through this program.
The most successful Gatorball player to date is Sean Gilliam, who was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 3rd round last year.

LET'S PLAY TWO!!!!!!!
At the recent membership meeting, Jim Guleserian conducted his usual Let’s Play Too segment by recapping the opening game and reviewed some of the rules changes.
Jim also reminded us of the first pitching rule infraction of the season courtesy of Marcus Stroman along with Rafael Devers offensive rules infraction.
Jim did have some very interesting and entertaining videos to share, but his computer decided to go on strike. Instead, he took us down memory lane by leading the gathered in song with "It's a Beautiful Day For a Ball Game" . A clip featuring James Earl Jones performing his famous soliloquy from Field of Dreams was also planned. But, the gremlins interfered.
Cubs World Chatter is proud to help out our friend by presenting two of his scheduled videos!
Here, for Jim and all of Cubs world we present the following.....

AN UNGRACEFUL MARK GRACE CARD!!!!!
By Wayne Richards
When I first discovered this rare card, I must be honest... so many puns flashed in my mind I couldn't stop laughing. In keeping with tasteful guidelines that I follow as a journalist, I certainly will not present them here.
However, finding this rare card has inspired me to begin a search for some of the stranger cards that have been available throughout the decades. When I find them, I'll display one in each upcoming edition of Cubs World Chatter.
Amazingly, in the cards I've collected in my file, there are very few Cubs cards. I do know there is a very peculiar photo card somewhere of former Cubs, Chuck Conners. I'll keep looking.

WRIGLEY TICKET PRICE THAT WILL SHOCK YOU!
by Wayne Richards
I can honestly say that for decades, the only way I could afford a day at the ball park was to attend a minor league game, such as the Kane County Cougars or be invited to sing the anthem (such as I did on the south side). It was a beautiful opportunity to be presented with provided with 4 killer seats, usually behind home plate. One other way was to take advantage of seats provided by a company, such as a Chevrolet dealership where my wife worked.
It is very difficult for families to visit the friendly confines without breaking the bank. As reported by my friend Tony. (our official spring training reporter) even the concession prices at Sloan Park were sky high!!!!
That is why I must share with you a little detail I've discovered that came as a complete shock. If you're in the Chicago land area (attention snow birds) it is possible to buy a ticket for......ready for this?......$9.00! You read me right. $9.00!
This special offer is in conjunction with selected games this coming April and May. However, since these special tickets are being offered on line, they probably will gone even before I finish this article.
Nevertheless, this little anomaly in the continuum will make me pay closer attention to the possibility of future offerings! Particularly since Wrigley hold the current record for highest average admission price. $110.11.

HOW DOES THIS IDEA STACK UP?
by Wayne Richards
There are many people who observe the practice of "beer cup snaking" as an amusing activity on a hot day. It certainly keeps the vendors happy.
But people are very mistaken if they think this ritual actually began at Wrigley. Here's the truth of the matter.

But people are very mistaken if they think this ritual actually began at Wrigley. Here's the truth of the matter.

This communal activity had its origins in Australia. Of course, there is a debate about this. Some Cub fans think they remember seeing this kind of thing as far back as 1969 at Wrigley. They might have. But unless someone has a photo those claims cannot be considered official.
It doesn't matter anyway. Wrigley management is putting the KABOSH on stacking. However, they have come up with something they think will lure people away from from the old snake ritual.
How about a nice hard plastic bat filled with a well known lager? They cost about $33.00. Good idea or not? Please feel free to share your opinion with the Cubs World Chatter.
In the meantime, let us all hope that there aren't more active bats in the stands than on the field.

FROM THE DESK OF WAYNE RICHARDS
Well, dear Cubs World, I have no idea how my desk got so messy. The bad news is that it will take me another month to sift through this stuff. However, the good news is I found a telephone pop up that I haven't seen for two decades.
I have a bit of business to complete before this edition comes to a close. Please indulge me.
As I'm sure many of you have noticed, I have a friend in Arizona who provides us with personal insights to spring training games. He attends several every year and shares his thoughts for me and my friends. His report is in last month's edition. Well...dear readers, you are my friends. So I have something to share with you.

As a musical entertainer, I have been fortunate to meet individuals whom, in time, have become trusted friends and extended family. One such an individual named Christine McGrath-Micari. One thing I learned about her is she is a die-hard Cubs fan.
I thought it would be fun to have two spring training reports this year since she visited Arizona for a game.
But, there wasn't enough time to file her report. Nevertheless, she sent me her observations anyway as a friend. I don't ever ignore fans or friends. So,
I have included her report to Cubs World in this month's edition. Many thanks dear friend!

This was my first time attending a Spring training game at Sloan park in Mesa Arizona. The stadium looked bigger than I pictured it but pretty much how I expected it to look just from watching the games on TV.
The attendance was 15,326! (Capacity is 15,000 so 100% full!) . The people working there were fantastic. My sister and I took my Aunt who just turned 82 years old and the gate was quite a bit away from our seats. They got us a wheelchair right away and helped us get to our seats.
Tickets were $63.00 each for seats (3rd base section) Kinda more than I thought it would be.
My sister and I went early to meet the players at the home plate gate. (A really nice guy named Robbie told me where to go when I called Sloan park before we even left for our trip) He told me mostly the newer players walk down the walkway to sign autographs and they pretty much just sign baseballs for the kids which is fine with me. However, even though I was studying since January to learn the names and the faces of the new players I didn’t recognize anyone. So no pictures with the players. (also I think they should put their names on their jerseys when they walk by which they didn’t-(Not fair)!!!!!!
The Cubs did end up losing 5 to 3 but my favorite player Ian Happ hit a 2 run homer allowing Nico Hoerner to score after Hoerner reached on an infield single to shortstop.
