A SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR CUBS WORLD!

HARRY THOLEN TO SPEAK AT SEPTEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING
by Dan Marx
For our Labor Day Cubs World meeting in September , we have a speaker who has many years of baseball coaching experience and will tell us of his interactions with many of our favorite Cubs players as he was growing up. (A complete factoid of our guest can be found toward the end of this newsletter.)
It is Harry’s formative years in Chicago that are the main interest for Cubs World. Harry was born in Chicago and played baseball at Senn High School and Amundsen Junior College. He then transferred to Illinois State University, where he completed his education. He became an assistant coach at ISU before assuming his first head coaching position at Amundsen Junior College. Harry has many stories to tell of his early years, including getting free tickets to Wrigley Field as a high school baseball player, and interactions with players like Ernie Banks, Gene Baker, and Hank Sauer. As a Cubs scout, Gene Baker taught Harry’s wife how to scout baseball games. Harry likes to talk about the many good major league players who got their start playing junior college baseball.

WATCH PARTY SPARKED BY CUB WIN
by Wayne Richards
With about 30 people in attendance at Gators in Brownwood (and our trusty totem pole overseeing the festivities) Cubs World enjoyed a 10 to 4 victory over the Red Sox.
Marcus Stroman threw six innings and allowed only one run. Cody Bellinger, on a real tear of late, sparked up the afternoon with a grand slam home run! What more does one need?
I'll tell you what I need. I need to build up some courage to try the alligator appetizer. If anyone tells me that it tastes like chicken, I'm just going to order chicken!
One other highlight of the afternoon was being informed that three new members were in attendance! Cubs World is growing and I must tell you its fun to watch!
The usual 50/50, along with the other beloved games, added additional fun to what turned out to be a wonderful afternoon for all!

THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY
(August Membership meeting)
by Dan Marx
Monday night, August 7th, we had a different membership meeting. Instead of our usual speaker meeting, we had a trivia night presented to us by Gee Whiz Productions. Headed up by our very own member, Greg Golden, they taxed our memories with 30 questions to get bragging rights for the next year.

Monday night, August 7th, we had a different membership meeting. Instead of our usual speaker meeting, we had a trivia night presented to us by Gee Whiz Productions. Headed up by our very own member, Greg Golden, they taxed our memories with 30 questions to get bragging rights for the next year.

The reason, of course, that I asked those questions, is because our team, Sheffield Avenue, knew all 3 correct answers and won the contest. The winners were Dan & Dale Marx, Myra & Burt Fischel, and Jim & Betty Guleserian.
But our evening was not just the contest. We had a delicious meal catered by Olive Garden to include their famous breadsticks and salad. We had some Cubs knowledge imparted on us by Jim Guleserian, and we had a very funny rendition of “ Who’s on First” with Wayne Richards and Jim Guleserian. I wish that I would have taped the skit.
And finally, we had a nice chat with our members regarding the merits of our newsletter. Almost 6 years old now, Wayne and I were thrilled to hear that the members truly enjoy the Chatter and gave us a few ideas for future editions.
See you in September. Good thing they didn’t ask that trivia question to name the artist.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
BY Jack Herbon
Earlier this year I met a nice couple at water aerobics at the Savannah Center pool. Both of them noticed I was wearing a Cubs T-shirt and of course the conversation quickly turned to the Cubs. They were excited to tell me about their granddaughter who is in Iowa and is married to Triple A pitcher Riley Thompson.
Riley was drafted in 2018 in the 11th round and his life in the minors has not been an easy one. According to various scouting reports Thompson is very athletic and has a quick tempo when on the mound. He also suffered a elbow injury in 2015 and had Tommy John surgery. He went throught a couple of years of rehab and now is trying to finally make it to the majors for the very first time. This kid could really use a break!
I'm sharing this short story because you hear about the struggles of what it takes to make it to the big leagues. Their granddaughter just had a baby in Iowa, so Riley Thompson is now a Dad for the first time. I now try to look at the Iowa Cubs box scores and scouting reports to see how he is doing. He has not pitched to one batter in the majors. So you know already who I'm pulling for when they expand the roster in September.
I'm sure Riley Thompson noticed what happened in Philadelphia this week. Phillies third baseman Wes Wilson hit his first career home run came in his first major league at-bat, leaving his father in tears. Wilson has more than 2,500 career at-bats in the minors with 97 home runs across seven seasons. He hadn't been called up once by a Major League team until the Phillies picked him up this week. On the third pitch he saw, the 28-year-old smashed a solo home run off Washington Nationals pitcher MacKenzie Gore. The Phillies dugout instantly erupted and Wilson's family followed suit. Moments later, the cameras showed Wilson's father in tears after the home run.
So Riley Thompson who rides the bus for hours at a time and sleeps in two star hotels just know there are unknown fans of yours here in Florida that are really pulling for you!

Don't know that we are necessarily the #1, but have always enjoyed watching Cubs on TV and going to games at Wrigley Field. We support our Illinois teams even though we no longer live there.

I have been a Cubs fan since I was 2 years old! In 2016 when our beloved team won the World Series I cried and so wished my Grandmother who passed 3 years too soon could have seen that victory!! Being a Cubs fan is generational and I’m ready to root them to another victory soon!

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
by Dan Marx
It is quite special that some new people have become a Cubs World member in recent months. We welcome you and invite you to always stop by our MEMBERS CORNER.
It is here that a subject of interest is introduced on a monthly basis. Why? Because we love to hear your opinions! Here's Dan with this month's subject........
This is a topic we can all chime in on. We all have our easy Cubs idols. Banks, Williams, Santo, Sandberg, Fergie, Maddux, etc.
Here’s the question. Give me another Cub whom you loved, but never go enough love from your friends or from the media.
Was it George Altman, Moose Moryn , Jim Hickman , Bill Madlock, or Glenallen Hill?
These over-looked and unloved Cubs might have gone unnoticed in the shadow of the superstar of the team. Or fans may think of them in a harsh light, because of a bad error they made.
I’m going to love to see some of the answers because you’re also going to see them, and say “ oh yeah”.
Let’s show these guys some love.

The experience I've had so far as Vice -President of Cubs World has been and continues to be an interesting, educational and very enjoyable experience. The people I serve with on the board are dedicated and possess a never ending desire to keep our club special.
Come this September, it will be election time. It is never too early examine some changes that are needed and to also extend an invitation to our members to run on the ballot. Here's my distinguished editor, but more importantly good friend , DAN MARX, with some interesting details.

CH...CH...CH... CHANGES!
By Wayne Richards
This amazing photo features our beloved Wrigley Field in all it's shining glory during the 1930's. After staring at this photo for some time two thoughts crossed my mind.
One was that my grandfather visited Wrigley during this time. It was an easy trip. He had a tailor shop on Grace just blocks away.
Secondly, in the upper left hand corner of the photo there is a white building with some kind of device on the roof. What is that? Can anybody identify it?
Recently, I watched an entertaining short video that demonstrates changes Wrigley has undergone through the decades. Here it is for all Cubs World to enjoy! CLICK HERE

WHEN THE BOBBLE HEADS COME BOB-BOB-BOBIN-ALONG
by Wayne Richards
As most Cubs World members know, our own Dave Bellovary is "King of the Bobbleheads!" I'm not implying by any stretch of the imagination that there is a spring attached to Dave's head. But his personal collection would make your head spin!
You might be interested in learning that it is quite easy to have bobble heads made up for your own personal needs. By the way, you can also have an Oscar produced for yourself. They're made in Chicago by the R.S. Owens company.
But now... back to this bobble head business. The procedure is simple. Here's how you do it. Simply take or find a photo with a head on image. The body of the product will be determined by your interest. Perhaps you're a golfer, or train engineer or an anthem singer. You can pick the right one from a number of companies. The catalogs are usually available on line.
In doing research for this article I discovered a few things that are quite surprising. Of course, many baseball fans are excited to procure them simply as a souvenir. But in reality, the manufacturing of sports figures is only a portion of products produced. The most sought after and popular bobble heads are those featuring animals, particularly those that can be secured to a dashboard.
The next questions you might ask is "What are they made of and how expensive are they?" GOOD QUESTIONS! The most common and inexpensive units are made from resin and plastic. They're also made of resin and wood. The most detailed actually feature felt cloth for facial realism (and added cost of course.)
But of all the materials used to piece together your bobblehead, it is a weighted bolt that is the most important element. Without it, the plastic head would simply collapse and hide into the figure like a scared turtle.
Here is an interesting question for all Cubs World members. Have you ever had a personal bobble head made? What was it? Tell us about it or send a photo if you like. You could just BOUNCE it over to us. ( Sorry about that.)

STRANGE BASEBALL CARD OF THE MONTH
by Wayne Richards
Yes...it's none other than the RIFLEMAN...Chuck Conners! This lefty played first base for the Chicago Cubs the year I was born, 1951! Back then, ball players weren't pampered and paid as much as today. While playing with the "Men in Blue", he kept a residence in Elmwood Park, Il. right behind the house where my wife Annie grew up!
I think the cameras during that year seem to be out of Whack! Or maybe the photographer had too many Hamms. Perhaps a long neck?

A BASEBALL CARD EXTRA!
by Wayne Richards
I was surprised and delighted to open my messages and find this amazing baseball card of the one and only ERNIE BANKS! It was sent to me a fellow musician named Steve Underwood.
Many of you know that I performed with with the Morgans Music Junction Band for about two and a half years. The Morgans own and operate their own concert venue in Summerfield.
Although the musicians on stage can play almost anything in any style , it is country music they embrace the most. Being a man who loves to take on challenges, I was asked to join the band and did so having never playing country in my life!
Steve Underwood, our drummer at that time, was a wonderful mentor...demonstrating what country is really all about. He should know having toured with major artists. I couldn't ask for a better mentor.
He is also a big time baseball fan and kindly sent this card...a very surprising gesture coming from a Cardinal fan!
