ITS MAGIC TIME!
by Wayne Richards
My daughter is in possession of many talents. In particular, I've always been in awe of her art work.
This pen sketch was rendered when she was very young probably age 6 or 7. Somewhere early on in life, her father exposed her to the joys of Wrigley Field and the Cubbies....as well as a few frosty malts.
I knew something was up when I witnessed her observing an old Warner Brothers cartoon on television and within seconds produced a perfect Bug Bunny on paper.
So...from her pen to paper to my office, I proudly share this work with all Cubs World members. May this drawing generate some special magic for the second half of the 2023 season! After all, we all know in our hearts that the Chicago Cubs are no Mickey Mouse operation.

YOUR RED WORD CHALLENGE
by Wayne Richards
As a writer for the Cubs World Chatter, words are very important to me. And....as a Cubs World member, words might pay off for you too! Here's how.
While you examine (and hopefully) enjoy this newsletter, take the time to look for a word printed in red. Write it down on a piece of paper or card and bring it to the August membership meeting at Colony.
There will be two drawings and if your word comes up you will win a gift card!

BRITS, BITS AND HITS
by Wayne Richards
Gators in Brownwood, has a rear wall filled with sports banners. Our beloved Chicago Cubs are represented. This section of the restaurant is where one could find happy Cubs World members cheering on the "Men in Blue".
There was much to be happy about with this special CUBS vs CARDS event which took place at the 80,000 seat London stadium. The Cubs were having a great time on the field, as well as touring London. This scenario fit well into Dave Ross's philosophy. Said Ross, "I want this team to have fun. They will wind up playing good baseball!" He was absolutely 'SPOT ON" as they say on the British telly.
Ian Happ came alive hitting two solo home runs. As a matter of fact, his first homer cleared a sixteen foot wall in center that was pushed back to 392 due to the Yankees and Boston's combined for 50 runs in two games. 54,662 fans jammed the stadium. Even though the game was played overseas, this was the largest attended MLB event of the year!

Those in attendance enjoyed not only a Cubs victory, but also the usual games that are so faithfully offered at such events. Your very humble correspondent won 4 dollars! I have spent the last several days with my accountant to investigate some great investment opportunities.
To be honest, I put the money toward a beer. Kudos to Gators for their attentiveness and great food.
In honor of the special day, I decided to order fish and chips. There was enough fish on that plate to serve the village of Fenney! I will publicly state without reservation, that the meal was infinitely better here than the fish and chips I once had in London. Of course, this was back in the mid eighties, so the quality might've improved since. Gordon Ramsey will see to that!
This was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon!

TWO GREAT ANTHEMS!
by Wayne Richards
There was spectacular pomp and circumstance preceding the opening series between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals at London Stadium. Although the televisions were on at Gators for our watch party, there was no sound until the duel anthems were concluded.
For those who missed it, here are the two amazing anthems performed with flair and heart! CLICK HERE

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR JAMES HILL
JOHN CURTIS
We are sad to report that Jim Hill, a Charter Member
of Cubs World has passed away.
Jim was born in Peru, Illinois and lived in Northbrook, Illinois with
Eileen, his wife of 52 years.
Jim was a Certified Public Accountant for several Fortune 500 companies.
Jim was an active member of both the Chicagoland and Cubs World
clubs and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
DAN MARX
On July 10th, myself and other Cubs World members attended the funeral service of our fellow Cubs World member, the late Jim Hill. Jim’s widow, Eileen Hill, was overwhelmed and deeply touched by the support that she received from her dear friends. Eileen related to us how much she misses her Cubs World family, and promises to come back and be a part of our group when things settle down somewhat.
Jim and Eileen were the consummate Cubs World members. They attended every game watch, every membership meeting, and every event. Jim was a huge Cubs fan, and that was even mentioned by the priest during the funeral service. I made a point of sitting with Jim and Eileen at just about every meeting for a little bit as I truly enjoyed their company. I hope that you all get a chance to go back into the newsletter archive in our newsletter section, and look at the August 2022 Chatter. Wayne did a terrific write up of Jim Hill in that issue.
John and Marge Curtis had a strong relationship with the Hills, as they sat at all of the meetings and events with them. Jim was a quiet, kind, gentle man, and he will be remembered by his Cubs World family.
Our hearts go out to Eileen and her 2 children.

In August of last year, I had the pleasure of putting together a piece about James Hill. I recall the interview being a non pressured and relaxed experience.
The Cubs World Chatter is proud to present a re-presentation of the article for your enjoyment. Cubs World will miss this gentle soul. Mourn the loss...but CELEBRATE THE LIFE!
WITNESSING HISTORY ON A MEMORIAL DAY
(by Wayne Richards August 2022)
It always amazes me that small towns such as Lasalle-Peru in Illinois boast of citizens that occasionally reach fame. Russ Meyer (not to be confused with the exploitation film maker) went on to play for six major league teams. Not bad for a guy who sold Christmas trees during the winter.
Another home town boy, a proud member of Cubs World by the name of Jim Hill, did not become a history maker. But he did witness one of the most amazing games in baseball history.
In a demonstration of sheer honesty during this interview, Hill proclaimed, "Growing up in La Salle Peru was boring. My father was a baker, but they say he could've been a professional baseball player. He died in 56 and my mother in 57."
Jim had a school chum named Marc who was a bit older, although they were both in some of the same classes. "He was a jovial kind of guy, " said Hill. " Marc's father owned some movie theaters and the family had some money. Marc said if I would help him get through college, he would pay for my last two years at college."
Marc also had another enticement for Jim. It involved a ride in a red thunderbird convertible to Chicago to attend a game at Wrigley between the 1st place Milwaukee Braves and the last place Cubs.
The date was May 30, 1956. Only 29,113 fans were present. Nobody could've predicted the history making game that took place that day!
Said Jim, "The Cub pitcher for the Cubs for game one was Russ Meyer. What I knew about him was that he was known as the "MAD MONK". He also was from La Salle-Peru and sold Christmas trees in the Winter. Marc took me down to the field to met him."
As it turned out, it wasn't the greatest day for Mr. Meyer. "Our home town hero gave up three homers in a row and got tossed from the game." After all, the "MAD MONK" was famous for his temper tantrums.
With the Cubbies being in last place, emotions were high as indicated by a bench clearing brawl. It was quite a day.
Another memorable day for Jim, now established as an accountant, arrived when a friend introduced him to a fine lady who would eventually become his wife. Eileen moved to the United States from Wales when she was 24 years of age. She has a masters in library science.
They moved to Chicago in the 60's. They had a son and a daughter. John is an architect and author with six published books to his credit. Margo (Margaret) studied film editing at Columbia college.
Jim and Eileen moved to the Villages in 2007 and joined Cubs World in 2016 after being encouraged to do so by our own Dan Marx. They also belong to the Chicagoland Club as well as the Welsh club. Jim enjoys the golf scrambles.
But, when it comes to baseball, Jim Hill has witnessed the worst of times and the best of times. There is much history to come.

If you're like me you probably have attended various trivia nights here in The Villages. I've been on a sports trivia team at Chula Vista recreation center. Matched wits at Bradenton for Friday night trivia. And I've had great times at the Lady Lake American Legion on Saturday nights.
All of these are lots of fun even when you don't finish in the money. So I thought, why not give you Cubs World members ten Cubs trivia questions to see how you stack up. bottom of this newsletter.
1/ Who wore number 14 before Ernie Banks?
2/ What was the original paint color of the center field score board?
3/ Who hit the only home run onto a roof top?
4/ Which player has played the most career games at shortstop for the Cubs?
5/ This was the first season that the Cubs reached 1,000,000 people in total attendance for a year.
6/ This player has the record for most career walks as a Cub.
7/ Don Kessinger was manager for just one year. Who was that team?
8/ Who was the Cubs pitcher that gave up the famous Babe Ruth called shot?
9/ Did Kerry Wood win a Cy Young award with the Cubs. True of False?
10/ What team did the Cubs lose to in the 1945 World Series?
ANSWERS
1. Paul Schramka

A GATHERING IN LEESBURG
by Dan Marx
“ Put me in coach- I’m ready to play today” . Actually...NO. I was not ready to play last night. However, that didn’t stop me and over 30 of my Cubs World friends from attending a Leesburg Lightning game at their beautiful Pat Thomas Stadium on the water on June 30th.
It was a full house of about 700-800 fans that turned out to watch the Lightning take on the Sanford River Rats on a beautiful evening. Before they played ball, our club was recognized by the public address announcer.
The game started with both pitchers having first inning problems. The Rats got 3 runs, and the good guys only scored 1 run on no hits. The Lightning tied the game in the 3rd , but after that they were playing from behind the rest of the way. They ended up scoring 5 runs on only TWO hits, but it wasn’t enough as the River Rats won the game 6-5. It was fun watching Rich Billings in action. Rich was a very popular speaker at one of our previous meetings, and is the manager of the Lightning.
Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the evening and vowed to come back again. Thank you, Jim Guleserian for setting this evening up for us.

WHAT SAY YOU?
by Dan the Man Marx and Wayne Richards
Once again here we are at our gathering spot of ideas and opinions. We always love to hear what you have to say.
This month brings us the All Star Game. This is actually a two-part question. First, is the all-star game important to you?
Television ratings have dropped from 8.69 million viewers in 2018 to 7.51 in 2022. The projected number for this year is 4.59.
Secondly, which do you prefer more...the actual game or the Home Run Derby?
Feel free to share your comments. This is our corner for free and open discussion.

WHAT SAY YOU (A member's Corner Extra)
by Dan Marx
I’m sure all of us have noticed that the standings in the NL central have been turned totally upside down this year. I don’t think that in April, anybody could have predicted St. Louis in last place , double digits out of first place. And, oh yes, first place is being held right now by the exciting Cincinnati Reds. How do I know they’re exciting? I have 2 of them on my fantasy team. If you have not seen this kid, Elly De La Cruz , yet you must go see him. He’s a once in a generation talent. He has had the hardest hit ball in the majors this year, maybe the top 5 hardest hit balls. He’s 6’5, and is the fastest player in baseball also. How fast is he? Go put anything in the microwave for 11 seconds. Before the time is up ( 10.8 seconds) De La Cruz is standing on third base with a triple. That also is the fastest time in baseball. Right now you’re saying,” but Dan, this is a Cubs newsletter, what the heck are you doing talking about the Reds? “
We made a ton of trades for prospects in 2021 and 2022. Some of us might still be in shock from when we gave away the core of our team that had a huge impact in us winning the world championship. We pretty much all agreed that we got a pretty good haul of prospects for them, including all of the prospects that were in our farm system before the trades.
So where are they? Some have come up with limited success. Obviously Morel and Hoerner have been the 2 most successful. And, I’m talking about players 26 years of age and younger.
Let’s go back to the Reds roster. They have 11 players in that age group. TEN of them at starters to include 2 starting pitchers and a closer). That doesn’t even include their best prospect, Christin Encarnacion Strand ,who is a top 3 prospect in the minors right now, but they have no place to put him.
The Cubs have 5 players 26 and younger on their team . Only 2 of them are starters ! Even the upstart Orioles have only 5 players 26 and under on their team, but all 5 are starters.
Jim G. and David Gran and a few others could help me more with this because they know our farm system much better than I do. Shouldn’t we get adventuresome, and bring up and start more of these heralded kids that we have? Could this put a spark into our team? I say let’s give it a shot. What say you?

BASEBALL TREASURE IN DUNEDIN
by Wayne Richards
You're probably wondering why a Beatles gold record is featured in this month's edition of the Chatter. What do the Beatles (or any rock star for that matter) have to do with baseball?
Robert Entel is the founder and operator of the PENNY LANE BEATLES MUSEUM in Dunedin, Fl. The Beatles collection can be explored free of charge, although a "contribution jar" is displayed.
The museum can be found in the midst of an art gallery in it's own designated room. Mr. Entel's collection is stunning and if you love the Beatles and the history of their music you must do yourself a favor and take a trip there to check it out.
WAIT A MINUTE! WE STILL DON'T KNOW WHY THIS MUSEUM IS BEING MENTIONED IN THE CHATTER. WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THAT? PLEASE EXPLAIN JOURNALISM BOY!

While engaged in conversation with Robert about a very rare Beatles album, Robert said, "Hey! You wanna see something really cool?"
He reached under his counter and whipped out a baseball signed by Ringo Starr during his 1992 ALL STAR TOUR. Ringo customarily invites many rock legends to be a part of his shows and the baseball seen here also contains the signatures of Joe Walsh, Todd Rundren, Dave Edmunds and others.
Robert does not keep the ball displayed out in the open. I don't blame him to be honest. It's very personal because he is also an accomplished bass player.
Speaking of who's on bass, one of Paul McCartney's bass guitars is on display. There are quite a few interesting treasures to check out.
If you're in the area, don't hesitate to stop by. You just might have a ball!

STRANGE BASEBALL CARD OF THE MONTH
by Wayne Richards
Is this an optical illusion or does Mickey have a huge hand? To tell the truth, I could've used a mitt the size of a throw rug when I was in little league.
Naturally, in my research, I look for cards relative to the Cubbies. But this one really stood out, as you can plainly see.
Mickey played third and first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1979 to 1990. A great deal of games under his belt might explain just how his hand became so big. Or..perhaps the photographer was drunk.
Our own Cubs World president , Don Mulder, is an enthusiastic supporter of youth baseball. Hatcher coaches youngsters in Orange county, Califormia. In addition, he is a respected real estate agent.
So the man with the giant hand is quite successful. Why...his house must be as big as his mitt!

FROM MY DESK
by Wayne Richards
I would very much like to publicly announce that if my desk ever gets this messy, you have permission to shoot me on the spot! I'm safe for now. (My desk never actually gets this disorganized.)
However, that doesn't mean that items don't cross my desk like a tsunami. Sometimes, stories break so fast, one loses track of time.
For instance, I had planned to put together a big ALL STAR GAME feature for this issue. But the most amazing thing happened. When I brought up the subject of the mis-season classic to some fellow baseball enthusiasts, they informed me that they had no interest in watching the game...even with three Cubs on the roster...MARCUS STROMAN, DANSBY SWANSON and JUSTIN STEELE!
After witnessing the lack of enthusiasm regarding this game, I called my favorite cousin in Chicago who happens to be a White Sox fan. (It's ok. I still love her.) I knew that the Sox very own, LUIS ROBERT was in the line up. That fact dad no effect on her whatsoever. For all is know, she watched Hallmark.
As I mentioned in a separate piece in this very edition of the Chatter, television ratings are way down. But hope springs eternal for Cub fans. The second half of the season is underway and perhaps we might be watching the Cubbies in the post season. If that happens, I promise ratings will go through the roof! GO CUBBIES!
