WAYNE RICHARDS MUSIC CENTRAL

WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER EDITION OF THE CHATTER!
Well dear Cubs World...things are quite interesting right now. Many of us didn't foster too much enthusiasm for the Cubbies at the start of the year.
But look at the Men in Blue now!
If anything, the future for the Cubs certainly looks much brighter....particularly for next season. But let's see what happens this September.
Let's hear what you have to say. Tell us what you think the outcome of the 2023 season will be.
GO CUBS GO!

ELECTION CENTRAL

WAYNE
If you've been a member of Cubs World for a while, I'm sure you realize that this club always makes a consorted effort to keep things operating at an entertaining and inviting level. We've enjoyed interesting speakers, delicious dinners and special events.
Don Mulder, board president, will be retiring from his position this November. As Don stated during the last membership meeting, "Being a member of the board can be fun! We'd love for people to join us!"
As current vice president, I can tell you without reservation that being a board member really is satisfying and very rewarding! I have always loved getting to know people. This has been and continues to be a great opportunity for Cub fans to create new ideas for our club and to do it with friends.
By the way, this is not a "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" kind of operation. If you check out the Cubs World web site, you can have easy access to all the by-laws, as well as other interesting information. CLICK HERE
Cubs World invites each and every one of you to explore the possibility of becoming a board member. If not, perhaps you might have suggestions.
There is currently an opening for the position of president. So just what does this position entail?
President
Elected in accord with the Bylaws to a 2-year term commencing on the even numbered years. Responsible for casting the vision of the Club including its’ purposes, objectives, and general activities. Prepares an agenda for regularly scheduled Board Meetings to define the actions and activities of the Club. Appoints the leaders of vacant Corporate Officer positions and its Standing Committees in accord with the Bylaws. Serves as primary contact person and ex officio member of its various activity teams. Presides over or delegates someone to conduct all club meetings. Maintains a Master Schedule of planned Club activities that extends at least six (6) months in the future.
In next month's Chatter, we will provide more details about the upcoming election in November and how you can participate. In the meantime, just think about taking an active part in helping Cubs World to continue to blossom. I like to think of Cubs World as a big family. Family members look out for each other. COME HELP US AND JOIN THE FUN!

Cubs World recently celebrated it's sixth birthday; and
most of its members say it's one of the best clubs in The
Villages. They enjoy hearing first hand stories about our
favorite baseball team and learning recent news about it.
And it's special events are like special deserts they enjoy
in their catered dinners together.
All of this happens because the club well organized with a
Board that shares the tasks that make it run so smoothly.
It's officially incorporated in the State of FL with a mix of Board
members serving one year or two year terms along with others
in key appointed roles that ensure smooth, continuous operation.
Every year in November, members that are interested in serving
are elected for some of these offices. These are the people that
'make things happen' in Cubs World. This year openings are
available for the President, Secretary and At-Large Members.
Please contact the club secretary if you want to know more about
these opportunities to contribute to the club in the club in this way.
Past experience is NOT required, only your interest in helping
serve your club. But I can guarantee that serving the club is this
way will dramatically increase your interest in Cubs World.

OCTOBER MEETING AND SPEAKER
by Dan Marx
Please join us for a fascinating story from our next speaker, Dave McCarthy, at our October 2nd membership meeting. Dave has been the executive director of the Ted Williams Foundation and has spent his whole career in law enforcement and private security. His security firm offered him the chance to have great relationships with many of the great MLB stars from the 1960s including Cubs greats. You won't want to miss this meeting.

His security firm offered him the chance to have great relationships with many of the great MLB stars from the 1960s including Cubs greats. You won't want to miss this meeting.

Dave McCarthy has a long career involving both security and baseball.
He grew up in Chelmsford, MA and spent many days going to Red Sox games at Fenway Park). After college Dave moved to New Hampshire where he enjoyed a 30 Year Career with the NH State Police. During that time he attended U.S. Secret Service School in Washington, D.C. in order to train in Executive Protection for the many Presidential Campaigns that take place in N.H. due to its staus as the first in the Nation primary. After that he personally ran the motorcades and visits on many occasions for Presidents Regan, Bush (Sr. & Jr.) & Bill Clinton.
In 1986 took Govenror Sununu to the owners box at Fenway Park during the ALCS and met Ted Williams, which started a 14 yr. friendship.
Dave traveled with Ted and many Hall of Fame players to Cooperstown and other MLB events nationwide. He formed a personal security team to assist Ted after Williams needed assistance with medical issues that hampered his getting around.
This friendship led to many personal relationships with former players including Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, and several of the Chicago Cubs including Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Don Zimmer, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Andre Dawson, Sam Fuld and many more.
Dave became the Executive Director of the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall of Fame after Ted’s passing in 2002 and now operates the Ted Williams Foundation providing charity auctions, player signings, 50/50 raffles and game day experiences to six MLB teams and two NFL teams.
He has many interesting stories from his time with players during his travels around Major League Baseball, including the Chicago Cubs.

WATCH PARTY SPARKED BY A WIN!
by Wayne Richards
Even the food at Gators is happy as twenty Cubs World members attended a watch party on Saturday, August the 19th. The cameras of Marquee captured a game from a filled Wrigley Field resplendent with blue skies.
Occasionally, due to the Air and Water show , occasional clusters of jets and rare aircraft flew overhead adding an element of excitement to the day's festivities. (Of course it's also a thrill to realize that the Cubbies are very much in the race.)
The game was a good one and Cubs World Chatter invites you to watch a re-cap. By the way, as some of you may know, I have been on a campaign to find some pants for Clark the Bear. I'm happy to say that at the conclusion of the game, Clark ran across the field with a '"w" flag waving in the wind donning pants!

CAN YOU FIND THE RED WORD?
In every edition of the Cubs World Chatter, we place a red word somewhere within the text. There's a reason we do that. It is to give every member an opportunity to win a valuable gift card!
When you discover the word, please jot it down on a piece of paper, a file card or a traffic ticket and drop it into a specially marked jar at the next membership meeting. There will be a drawing. Good luck to y'all!

MEMBERSHIP MEETING FEATURED SHOW AND TELL SURPRISES!
by Wayne Richards
About 30 Cubs World members who attended the September 4th meeting were already in a good mood from the Cubs 5 to 0 victory over the Giants! Little did they know of the treats that were in store for them. The evening began with the pledge of allegiance conducted by yours truly followed by a video of the anthem sung the late Jimmy Buffet. It was a fitting tribute to our country as well as to the life of a very important figure in music.
A simple and delicious variety of sandwiches were prepared for us by the fine folks at McCallisters. Oh...I loved those chips!!!!!

Jim Guleserien prepared and delivered his always interesting segment called "LET'S PLAY TOO". He provided an in depth report on the Cubs minor league franchises and how they were doing this year. Generally...most teams did much better last year.
His cavalcade of videos were fun to watch. But watching Jim's reaction to what we were watching was even more entertaining!!! The man is a born actor and we catch some wonderful glimpses of that talent from time to time. (Right Abbot?)
Jim concluded his segment with a question that has perplexed many fans all season long. "What do you think of the pitch clock?" blurted Jim. I was surprised to see at least 70 percent of the gathered approve of it! This is probably attributable to the fact that the length of the games are shorter. (Except when there are challenged plays.)

Our guest speaker for the evening was Harry Tholen. His wife of 57 years, Susan, looked on admiringly and why not? He's had a remarkable life and he shared some amazing stories. In addition, he celebrated nostalgia in style by producing some amazing items for us to examine.
Good coaches are people to be admired. Starting as an assistant coach at ISU, he moved on to become head coach at Amundsen junior college.
Tholen has a romantic view of baseball , which most likely began when he played high school baseball and got free tickets to Wrigley Field. This continued throughout his career. Do you know of many people who ever attended a midnight dinner in a bull pen?
He described some of the greats like Ernie banks as a class act. But, of course, we already knew that!

Throughout Harry's presentation, Cubs World members had an opportunity to not only listen to great stories, but also had a chance to physically hold a few historical artifacts. What is better than "SHOW AND TELL"?
Our first item is a baseball that certainly deserves a stamp of approval. In fact...IT IS STAMPED as you can see.
A couple of baseball mitts from the 1930's were tossed around from table to table. One of them fit my wife Annie perfectly! "Sorry, " I said "You can't have it!"
A very handsome Chicago Cubs plaque was also passed around. Mr. Tholen announced that he had planned to bring another one...but it was attached to his wall.
Finally, he held up an item that touched everyone in the room. I'm sure we all have some remembrance of 2016! Harry Tholen's warm and conversational style helped make this membership meeting one to remember.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Herbon
One of the most famous movie quotes is from the actress Betty Davis. In the 1950 movie "All About Eve" Betty Davis says, "Fasten your seat belts its going to be a bumpty night." Well, that quote sure sums up the Cubs recent play especially against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cubs sure hit some bumps, not from our pitching but from our bats that went cold. Every team goes through these, let's hope the Cubs can finish strong.
The Cubs pitching staff went from strong expectations at the beginning of the year to major question marks in the middle of the season. After bringing in veteran Jameson Taillon in free agency to bolster the rotation alongside Marcus Stroman, Kyle Hendricks and Justin Steele, there were rightful expectations that the team would have a strong rotation.
They got off to a reasonably good start overall, but then the rotation completely fell apart after the injury to Stroman, the struggles of Taillon and Hendricks, and a lack of good backend starting pitching.
It's been the young pitchers and rookies who have calmed the storm in recent weeks. Rookies Javier Assad and Jordan Wicks are performing at high levels in the starting lineup, Steele is an NL Cy Young contender and the bullpen is full of exciting, young arms. The Cubs have been able to develop the talent in their pipeline and gotten them ready to perform at the major league level.
These young arms remind me of those days we had with Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. But, now instead of two high class pitchers we have many more in the pipeline to help this team not just this year but for maybe the next decade.
The Cubs future looks very bright. Maybe some of the Cubs success can rub off on our Bears too?
William Shakespere once said, "We know what we are, but know not what we may be." Kind of sums it all up.

BETTY GULESERIEN HAS A LOVE OF LIFE
by Wayne Richards
This photo features a gracious and smiling woman by the name of Betty. It is an altogether fitting portrait of someone who doesn't need a bucket list to enjoy life.
Her husband, Jim, treats Cubs World with his monthly presentation called LETS PLAY TOO! There seems to be peace and harmony at the Guleserien household despite the fact that he was a north-sider and she lived south.
Born in 1950, Betty lived in Chicago until the age of ten. "My father was a white sox fan," said Betty. "He kept score. The entire family were big fans."
Betty attended St. Leo Catholic school in Woodridge, Il. (She may not have known it at the time, but one of her neighbors was Nick Solak who eventually played for the Atlanta Braves.)
She graduated from Downers South, weighing the possibility of pursuing a journalistic career. However, the call to nursing was stronger and Betty became a registered nurse in 1971.
In addition to Betty's two daughters from a previous marriage, the Guleseriens brought Jim Jr. into the world to round out the family. The three children did well in school each eventually earning a masters degree.
Everyone in the family loved baseball. "I remember when we took long rides in a van to get to Wrigley, " said Betty. "For a while we actually had seasons tickets."
After time, Betty's nursing skills paid off. She became a case worker for government employees. Said Betty, "I formed my own company called GULESERIEN CASE MANAGEMENT. I absolutely love the job!" This is certainly not surprising since both Betty and Jim love people.
The Guleseriens are both part of the backbone of individuals who help make the Villages the "Friendliest Village on Earth!" They are involved with the Chicagoland Club. Betty is also a practitioner of yoga. "I also tend to an herb garden," proclaimed Betty. "Both Jim and I love to read. I love thrillers like, "WOMAN IN THE WINDOW". (If you're interested, there's an adaptation of this story currently on Netflix.)
Betty also has something to admit. "I love Cubs World more than I ever thought I would!" said stated with a smile in her voice.
When asked if she had any items in her bucket list, she hesitated for a bit for responding. Said Betty, "None." "There's no place you'd like to go?'"asked the interviewer. "Well, Maybe South Africa or the Antarctic, "stated Betty.
One gets the sense that she loves life just as it is. This doesn't mean there aren't adventures ahead. They have a great grandchild on the way!
Said Betty, "I'm always willing to try something new. Basically, I'd like to be remembered for my love of life.

DAN MARX PICKS WAYNE RICHARD'S BRAIN
Dan- In my last interview with Wayne, I did a deep dive into the highlights of Wayne's life. In this interview, I'm doing a deep dive into Wayne's brain. He has some great answers!I
DAN- Name 2 or 3 of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen at home or abroad that have literally taken your breath away.
WAYNE- Wrigley Field. The Norwegian Fiords. The Grand Canyon.
DAN- If you could spend a day with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be?
WAYNE- Ray Charles. Mel brooks. Ennio Morricone.
DAN- If you could live the life of any famous person who ever lived, who would that be?
WAYNE- Comedians are usually depressed. Actors struggle their entire life. Politicians are corrupt. I'm very happy being me!
DAN- Do you keep in touch with your best friend from elementary school or High School?
WAYNE- Yes I do. He still owes me money.
DAN- Is there one teacher that had a profound difference in changing the direction of your life?
WAYNE- Yes. He owes me money too. (Just kidding.) This gentleman was my writing coach when I studied journalism. He made us compose different kinds of pieces. With each paper, I took meticulous care in making sure the forms were correct. But each effort received low marks. I was frustrated and mad and I sent a letter to him containing very colorful language insulting him. Afterward, he called me into his office and handed the paper back to me marked with an A+. He said, "I'm sending you to my advanced class! You expressed what you really felt in that letter. A true writer needs to be honest!" He opened up many creative avenues for me.
DAN- What was your favorite sport to play growing up?
WAYNE- I was a terrible right fielder, but I loved baseball. I tell people to this day that whenever I stepped up to home plate and held a bat, I had a no-hitter!
DAN- What was your favorite toy or board game growing up?
WAYNE- When I was knee high to somebody's knee, I used to romp around on a metallic, noisy and glorious Polk brother's truck! The wooden floors in our Rogers Park brownstone apartment were beautiful until I scratched it up with that thing!
DAN- If there was a 13th month, what name would you give it?
WAYNE- Knockitoffruary

Here we are again gathered in our lovely spot where freedom of speech lives! We thought we'd try something a little different. Let's see how many of you can fill in the blanks.
Many of us have seen Ronnie "WOO WOO" rambling around the friendly confines, bellowing out his familiar asthmatic cheers.
At first, we mostly enjoyed the novelty. But in time, his heartfelt efforts have become as annoying as a late afternoon gull plotting a mission to grab a hot dog right out of your hand!
Here are five questions about this most unusual individual. Enter your answers by clicking on the COMMENT button. Have a little fun and let's hear from you. The correct answers will be announced in the October edition of the Chatter. (No Cheating!) Ready?
1. What is "Woo Woo's real last name?
2. On what side of Chicago was he born?
3. What radio personality bought Ronnie a pair of dentures?
4. What is "Woo LIfe" ?
5. What did Harry Carey call him?
If you come up with five correct answers, you will possess incredible bragging rights and our endless respect.

WHAT DID HE SAY?
by Wayne Richards
I have always enjoyed writing. For those who have been reading the Chatter for a while you will notice that I dig into a subject with, perhaps, a different perspective than usual. I'm very interested in human nature.
For example...this is the year of the new pitch count. The result of this alteration in the rule book is that most games have really moved along. But, to be honest with you (and I always will be) the first thought that popped into my mind regarding faster games is how badly it might effect the vendors!
One decision that Dan Marx and I made concerning this newsletter is that it be bright, fun and informative. This is our goal. Of course, a shadow of sadness certainly comes along once in a while. But overall, we love to celebrate the Cubs and baseball as much as we can.
This is why I have been upset with some commentators in both print and broadcast media who take every chance to shed the Cubbies in a harsh light. Believe me, they're out there!
First, let me pat one announcer on the back. He perhaps is the most fair, honest and diplomatic national announcer on the air. He is the best! I speak of the one and only Bob Costas.
Here is a man who knows how to give "play by play" with objectivity. I remember hearing him cover a game where the Cubs were way behind. But, Bob was kind enough to reveal his feelings about how great it always is to visit Wrigley! He knew how to make hurting North siders feel good. He also sang "Take me out to the ball game" doing everything he could to capture the spirit of Harry Carey out of obvious respect.
On the other side of the coin is an announcer with a very recognizable last name who is disliked even in his own home town of St.Louis! It is none other than Mr. Chip Carey!
To add insult to injury, the Cardinal fans are the ones really hurling daggers! Here's what one on line fan stated.
"When he was a Cubs broadcaster, he was told he could go to the park on the subway." Chip answered, "How can you ride to work on a sandwich?"
Now, of course, most of these rants and statements are quite funny. But they begin to sour when your team is doing well and someone starts razzing them. This is a real downer.
Negative on line comments have been flying like scud missiles recently, even with services connected with the Cubs! It's disappointing to say the least.
A writer named Aldo Soto has really been awful. "A terrible job at the front office to bring in difference -makers." I refuse to share some other things he said. It's vile to say the least.
I have told the story a couple of times of how I got to know Jack Brickhouse. We had some great conversations. During one discussion about baseball, he informed me that most writers and commentators really don't know the true atmosphere in a locker room. Much of what what they say is mere conjecture and guessing without real knowledge.
I think what Jack was trying to tell me was to always take what announcers say with a grain of salt!

SPORTS BOOK FANATICS
by Wayne Richards
I've never been a gambling man. Not really. Certainly, I've been to Vegas a few times. But I've always taken more interest in the shows and restaurants.
Nevertheless, the state of Nevada is the only one that allows sports betting on all levels!
Vegas is like MECCA for this stuff.
Of course, with the Cubbies doing so well , one might wonder what the odds are out there for the Cubs to take the division...or maybe take the race to a historic finish! I'd be scared to wager any serious money.
But then, I think of when I was a much younger man visiting my father down in Boca. We went to the Pompano race track and I won $500.00 on a ten buck long shot!
Anyway, the amount of cash thrown around in one of these gambling arenas every day is staggering. There are a lot of, so called, experts spinning around numbers.
So...what exactly are the odds? As this is being written (on the 31st of August), the Cubs have a projected win total of 82.5, and have a 19.3% chance of winning the National League Central. Overall, their playoff odds sit at 29.8%.
I think I'll stick to 50/50.

MY CONNECTION TO THE PAST
by Wayne Richards
I wasn't around in the late 1930's. But if I had been, this is what I'd see around Wrigley Field.
My grandfather came to the U.S.A from Moscow in the early 20's I believe. Living two blocks from the friendly confines, even he witnessed a transformation in Wrigleyville.
Still, I think it would've been interesting to park my car for a dollar and walk through a dusty coal field to get to the ticket office.
Or I could've board the Green Hornet on Clark Street in Rogers Park. Actually, in a way, I DID get to ride those trollies after they were converted into el trains! So I guess I really do have a connection to the past!
