A Special Report by Jim Guleserian

We’re pleased to announce our first golf scramble of the season on Wednesday, May 11th at Volusia and Escambia executive courses. The first tee time is slated for 12:17. There will be a $6 entry fee for prizes afterwards. We need your help, golfers! We need to have 32 golfers in order for this to work. We have had great fun in previous years. Looking forward to seeing all of you on the first tee. That view on top of Volusia is really cool.

A MUSICAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
by Dan Marx

April means 2 things to Cubs World members. It’s the month where hope springs eternal for our Cubbies as the baseball season begins, and it’s the month where we get to hear from Daily Sun sports reporter, Cody Hills.
The evening ( Monday April 4th) had a great start with a delicious catered turkey dinner from Bob Evans. Then Jim Guleserian gave us a little different presentation in Let’s Play Too with sing along baseball  favorites like “ Centerfield” and “ Its a beautiful day for a ballgame “ made us all smile. And, of course,  there were the 2 Steve Goodman songs including “ Go Cubs Go”. Member Doc Chubinski was our guest singer, and treated us to a couple of his original songs.
Cody Hills had a real challenge ahead of him to try and make the members feel good about what kind of season we might have. Like every other Cubs fan, he was extremely disappointed at what happened at the trade deadline last July, losing the core of our championship team.  He kept saying we were behind a rock and a hard place, and he wasn’t even sure if management knew  their way forward. He has great faith in David Ross. He wants to see good lineup management, so that all of the strikeout artists are not all bunched together.
He loves our new acquisition, Suzuki, and thinks he will be outstanding. His fly ball rate is over 50%, and the last time the Cubs had a player with that rate was Sammy Sosa. He knows our pitching staff is a big question mark, and knows that a turnaround by Kyle Hendricks would be a big factor in making us more successful.

Cody was very happy with the minor league players that we received at the trade deadline, but acknowledges that it will be a few years before we see the fruits of that.
Till next April, Cody, we thank you for your insight and we welcome you to join as at any of our meetings or game watches.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Hebron

After watching the first few games of the season two things come to mind. First is Pat Pieper who was the Cubs field address announcer from1916-1974 a span of 59 years! He would always announce "Attention...attention, please...have your pencil and scorecards ready and I'll give you the correct lineup...for today's ballgame."  Boy does that ring true today when I saw the Cubs take the field for their opener against the Brewers!  So many new faces, that it was a must to buy that scorecard when you entered the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field. It will take the first month of the season to get a grip on who is good and who is bad!
The second is just after the Cubs game I watched the classic movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.  And sure enough Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy is seen not at Wrigley Field but high up on a hill looking at the posse closing in on them. "Who are those guys" said Butch.  The timing could not have been more perfect because that is the way I felt right after watching these new Cubs with the names I've never heard before.
For now, I really cannot give you any Cubs that I think will become the true stars of this team. They all have fast bats, fast arms and fast legs. But, can they lay down the bunt or steal the base when needed? Time will tell...

Billy Williams My Sweet-Singing Lifetime with the Cubs by Fred Mitchell

I’ve always known Billy Williams was an outstanding player for the Cubs and had worked with the organization after his retirement, but I didn’t know the man Billy Williams.
I am embarrassed by my naivete of segregation at the time of Billy’s start in professional baseball. He had a real struggle in the early days that made him a stronger person.  Life for the black players was horrendous especially in the south.  He was lucky to have strong people to support him in those days and the rest of his life.
It was very interesting on his views of what went wrong in the heartbreak year of 1969, making no excuses for the outcome.  He spoke of how Chicago (and the nation) needed something positive, and the Cubs were determined to be that joy.
The Mobile Mafia, as it is known, was a vast group of excellent black ballplayers from Alabama.  Whether they made it to the MLB, played in the Negro League or neighborhood fields, was an impressive group of men that supported each other and encouraged each other in the game and life.
Billy’s memories of his Cubs teammates is fun to read about.  Many of those guys were real characters and some you wouldn’t want to mess with.  He touches on his career after his playing days, the problems the league as with steroids, and life.
There were times reading was a bit challenging, especially with the statistics, but on the whole it is an easy and interesting read.  It has encouraged me to read more about the Negro League. Check it out!

THE REAL AMERICAN IDOL!
Many Cubs fans may not realize that our beloved icon was not only a great ball player, but an American singing idol!  Listen to his tonality and skill as a vocalist!  This is also a very nice tribute to the man.

DAN THE MAN!
by Wayne Richards

Hyde Park, Illinois is home to the world famous Museum of Science and Industry as well as the 57th Street beach and the University of Chicago campus. It is also the birthplace of our good friend Dan Marx. His father, Martin, owned a camera store there.
After a move to the South Side, Marx attended South Shore High and then Bradley University. After graduating with a BS in business, his solid education helped him in a career that took him from a retail managerial/ supervisory position with Florsheim Shoe Company into the wholesale world with Napco for the next 40 years. The Jacksonville based import company sold goods to retail florists, garden centers, and gift shops. Living in Rochester, NY , travel was essential to Buffalo and Syracuse, NY.
Being a South sider, one often wonders just how Dan became interested in the Cubs. “ My brother being a Cubs fan had a big influence on me. Also, listening to the 2 Chicago radio announcers was night and day. Bob Elson, the White Sox announcer could have conducted funeral marches. Jack Quinlan made pop ups to short center sound like homers.” “ I was about 9 or 10 when my dad took my brother and I to Wrigley for the first time. My dad even arranged for me to have my bachelor party on the Wrigley Field catwalk.”
Dan was certainty excited about a young lady named Dale, now his wife of 53 years.
Together, they are very proud of their family. Their son, Jeff, is single and lives in Manhattan. Shelburne, Vt. is home to daughter Jennifer and her husband, Scott Smith. They have 2 daughters, Lily and Addy.
Since his move to The Villages, Dan has been involved in several activities, including pickleball and golf. “ I also enjoy delivering food for the Wildwood soup kitchen, and soliciting food donations for them”. He does all this with a smile on his face, which he believes in.
In 2016, Dan’s very good friend, Dave Gran,  carried the MLB package on his tv. They would watch Cubs games together and talk baseball for hours. During one of those talks, they decided it was time to start a Cubs fan club. Additional friends like Gary Koca and Dick Stone helped form and launch the club we all now love.
Dan Marx is very proud of what Cubs World has become and how it continues to grow. He desires for the club to maintain its unique operation. The activities such as game watches, golf scrambles, and entertaining membership meetings are important to Dan. He stated” many friendships have been created because of this club.”.
Mr. Marx is not only a friend of yours truly, but also my editor for the newsletter you are now perusing and that I enthusiastically write for. I also appreciate and embrace his mantra. “ Having a good time and smiling is what it’s all about!”

SUZUKI IS ONE TO WATCH
This seems to be the attitude Chicago Cubs management and co-players  have adopted with regard to acquisition , Seiyia Suzuki.  It is said that he has a tremendous sense of humor and contributes to a light-hearted atmosphere in the locker room.
During an interview, a foul ball hit by Willson Contreras nearly hit Suzuki and his facial expression was hysterical because nobody else seem to notice the ball bouncing around.
Cubs World would like to know what YOU think!  Is this another Fukedome or is he the real deal?  Let's hear what you have to say!

CHICAGO CUBS PRODUCTS TO REMEMBER
by Wayne Richards

As a young boy, I recall with great fondness the joy of going to Wrigley Field and getting my hands on a frosty malt!  It was the GREATEST treat in the world in a wonderfully magic place.  The only thing better than a frosty malt was having a second frosty malt with the risk of a brain freeze onset during particularly hot days!
I also loved the cardboard file cabinet filled with properly filed nacho chips and a decent helping of melted cheese!
My grandfather, who occasionally accompanied me to a game, seemed quite satisfied with his beer of choice.  Hamms.  The beer refreshing!  This fine gentleman was responsible for giving me a little taste of beer for the first time in my life.  It almost was my last taste because I hated it!
"Can I have another frosty malt please?"
Of course, as the years and decades passed by, I completely changed my mind about beer.   I cannot imagine going to a game without a relaxing brew.

There was even a time when a butter company became connected with the Chicago Cubs.  Blue Valley Butter was so popular at the time, the Cubs printed their ad right on the daily program!
This all took place in the 30's.  It was inexpensive and recommended as a diet staple to help children grown strong!
The Blue Valley Creamery company was incorporated in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1901.
Headquarters were based in Chicago on Jackson Blvd.
After the company folded, the building became an early home of the famous Fanny May candy       company.
Some collectable signs and artifacts for this company are worth a great deal of money, particularly t     those connected with baseball.

A SPECIAL MUSEUM CONTAINS AN AMAZING BASEBALL SURPRISE!
by Wayne Richards
Located right on the Pier of St. Petersburg, Florida you will find a handsome little museum.  It presents and celebrates the history of this vibrant city.
But also within its walls stands what could best be described as a unique monument to the game of baseball.  It is a unique collection of baseballs.  Actually, according to the Guiness Book of Records, it is THE LARGEST COLLECTION IN THE WORLD!
As you enter the museum and pay a nominal fee, one can see the inviting baseball displays off to the left.  It is inviting to say the least!  It's like entering a carnival dedicated to America's great pastime!
First of all, as you explore the facility, do NOT expect things to be in any kind of alphabetical order.  If you're looking for a ball signed or a section dedicated to Ernie Banks, you'll find it eventually if you keep looking.
One wall is dedicated to the greats such as Babe Ruth, Joe Jackson, joe Dimaggio, Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb and others, each with signed balls and a brief history.
Also in keeping with the "historic" flavor of the museum, there is a section displaying baseballs throughout history.  I was shocked to find a baseball signed by the last  survivor of the TITANIC!

Picture
One fun section contains a plethora of baseballs signed by celebrities from show business, politics, industrialists and others.  I was excited to find a ball signed by one of my musical idols..B.B. KING!  Even the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock placed his John Hancock on some items.  However, I did not find any real signatures from John Hancock himself.  Theres good reason for that.  When John was in power, baseball hadn't been invented yet.
There is also a collection of balls signed by teams.  Major, minor...its all here!
The great baseball announcers are all represented here...including the one and only Harry Carey!

Picture
Discovering this little piece of baseball heaven was an unexpected thrill.  The day had simply been planned to enjoy the St. Petersburg waterfront with its bistros, bars and pleasant walkways.  I have grown quite fond of this beautiful area and its fascinating sights.
But to find something like this sandwiched in between million dollar yachts boggles the mind!  Just how did this collection get started and grow into the amazing attraction it has become?
It is all because of a baseball fanatic by the name of Dennis Schrader, who has become known as 'THE GREAT COLLECTOR".
His little empire began in 1956 while attending a New York Yankees spring training game.  Dave was nine and walked around carrying a baseball.  Mickey Mantle noticed this and signed the ball.  It was then that the heart of a true collector began to beat.
Dennis and his wife, Mary, still collect items and it it is quite possible that the museum will need to provide more space as needed.  For baseball fanatics, this is a wonderful bit of news.  It should put a smile on the face for anybody who as ever felt a rush at the sound of an umpire shouting, "PLAY BALL!"

St. Petersburg Museum of History
335 2nd Ave NE, St. Petersburg, FL
Hours are Mon. - Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.Sun. 12 - 5p.m.
