                    THE NAME GAME!

Do you know this team?  Why it's none other than The CHICAGO COLTS.  Previous to that, they were known as the CHICAGO WHITE STOCKINGS.  (Can you imagine how dumb that name would look on our iconic Wrigley sign?) At one time, they actually had no official name and were dubbed THE ORPHANS!
So who was responsible for coming up with these names?   In the old days, that responsibility was usually designated to sports writers!  In describing young Chicago prospects, the name "CUBS" first appeared in March of 1902 in the Chicago Daily News.  Thanks to a typesetter, the decision was made to print the word cubs using a capital "C"!
Before you knew it, all the newspapers did the same and with a little continued persuasion from manager, Frank Chance, the name became official!  GO CUBS!

One of the most frustrating realities of baseball is the fact that managers telegraph information to the players via hand signals.  This is a particularly important process when pitchers and catchers are involved.
Of course, in due time, players from opposing teams begin to read through these signals.  So is there a fix for this problem?  According to major league baseball there is!
Smart phones may soon be utilized to transmit information between players on the field!  This is a procedure that has sparked strong debate amongst professionals.  Perhaps this development could be discussed at a future CUBS WORLD meeting.

TO CARL EDWARDS JR. CONFESSION IS NOT NECESSARILY GOOD FOR THE SOUL!  (Nor good for the game!)
Closely knit baseball teams like the Chicago Cubs are very protective of each other.  Emotions can run high on the field, even during spring training games.
From time to time we have all witnessed players getting beaned by a baseball delivered with the
velocity of a cannon!  In a recent spring training game both Kris Bryant and Wilson Contreras were on the receiving end of such tosses.  So, later on the mound, Edwards took some retaliatory target practice on Seattle's Austin Nola.
It is common knowledge that these kind of incidents do take place from time to time.  But, Carl is the first pitcher in memory to actually ADMIT that the ball did NOT slip out of his hands by accident.  During a press conference he actually announced that he did indeed PURPOSELY throw the ball at Nola.
Such unsportsmanlike conduct should always be met with harsh fines, suspensions or both!   CUBS WORLD would like to know your opinion on this matter.
In the meantime, Edwards has been sent to AAA to work on timing.  Turns out, lifting his leg and holding it stationary was a devise created to help his delivery.  But, nobody bothered to tell him its illegal during regular season.
Carl Edwards, after adjustments are made, will return later this year according to management.

Hi everyone!
This is Clark the Bear.  I just woke up, so please excuse my appearance.
I just want to invite you to read the Cole Hamels story below and look for a word printed in RED!  Write it down on a card and bring it to the next meeting on Monday, MAY 6  at SAVANNAH CENTER.  Now...what the hell did I do with my shirt?

COLE HAMELS MIGHT HAVE ACCIDENTALLY STARTED A NEW TREND
Spring of 2019 will go down in Cole Hamel's book of life as a spectacular chapter!  Here is what happened.
Feeling healthy and strong, Cole hit the links and recorded a hole in one.  Then, in his final spring training tune up, he hit a dramatic home run!  WHAT A WEEK!
Perhaps Cole could market a new technique using a bat to play golf.  Who Knows?  Crazier things have happened in sports.
Actually, now that I think of it, if I had only put the ball on the ground in little league, I might've hit the damn thing once in a while.

OPENING DAY PARTY!
Chicago Cubs fans take opening day seriously, even if the season began in Texas.  Gator's in Brownwood was the setting for a gathering of enthusiastic Cub fans who know how to party!  Close to 80 people demonstrated what being a Cub fan was all about!  The Mormon Tabernacle choir couldn't have done a better rendition of "TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME" AND "GO CUBS GO", the latter of which  was sung correctly BEFORE the game for a change!
There were games of chance set up with cash prizes.  Great food.  Beer.  Fun people.  Chicagoans do it right!
It was a beautiful afternoon for all with a Cub win over the Rangers of 12 to 4. as icing on the cake.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TO OUR CUBBIES?
The Chicago Cubs had an amazing spring training season which demonstrated a tight and productive bull pen, which in this day and age of baseball is vitally important.  But now that the horse race has officially busted out of the starting gate, the horses seem to be running in different directions.
It feels as if the team has shut down.  There is no drive.  No apparent determination.  But, guess what?  It always feels this way during slumps.
First of all, Yu Darvish is like the little engine that could...except he hasn't!  And he'd better!
Next, Joe Madden announced early on that he was going to take a more hands on approach to generating the Cubbies engine, except that the parts don't seem to be working too well with the re-tooling.  Add on to that the exit door that awaits him at the end of he season unless there is a miracle trophy contributed to the Cubbie case.  This must be weighing heavy on his mind and that shadow of quiet despair has most likely spread across the locker room.
Its time to break out the "TRY NOT TO SUCK" tee shirts and pray for a great opening home stand.
CUBS WORLD WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.  YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE?

 The Luckiest Retirees in Florida
by Don Mulder (President)

Many of us winter in the South and summer in the North. It's not always the weather behind
this behavior, it's family.  And its grandchildren more often than not behind the desire to spend
our summers 'up North'.  Watching them grow up as they enjoy summer sports is one of our
favorite things to do.

Well, suppose we could avoid all this effort and relocation and still enjoy watching our grandchildren
grow up?  Jimmy and Bruce Alverna from Ohio have found a way to do just that.  Their son
was recruited by Citizen's Bank to come to Florida... and so the grandparents decided to retire here.

Jimmy coached every level of youth baseball in Ohio while his family was growing up and enjoys
watching their grandson, Corey play on the Cubs World sponsored team.  He lives close by, so he
can see every game.  They love to vacation back in Ohio and still maintain a home there.  But they
come home to Florida to see their family and watch the grandkids grow up.  What a life!

Well, the start of this 2019 season is certainly not what we expected! The opener of the season in Texas and the home opener at Wrigley Field were easily the highlights of the first dozen games. As of now don't even go near those power rankings they love to post at various web sites.
The Cubs must certainly get more out of their bullpen if they want to have any chance of making the playoffs. Who will step up and make the difference? We need our starters to pitch more innings and avoid high pitch counts. Tyler Chatwood just may be that one pitcher we need to help out this team.
Certainly, better things were expected from the Cubs this season. After all, they still very much resemble the same team that has gone to the postseason the last three years. Every team goes thru a tough spell during the season. I much rather have it at the start then at the end. Just look at what happened to us in 2018 and you would agree with me.

DO YOU AGREE WITH JACK?   WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!  ALWAYS FEEL FREE TO SEND US COMMENTS!

A LOSS FOR BASEBALL!

Former Chicago born native and Cubs  right -handed pitcher, SCOTT SANDERSON, has died at age 62.  He had an impressive 19 year career in the majors.
Sanderson also played for Oakland, Montreal, Yankees, Angels, Giants, White Sox.  In 1991, he was an ALL STAR with the Yankees.
During the baseball strike in 1994, Scott earned respect from fellow players by stating, “Who among us wants to leave the players who come after him less than what he received from the players that have come before him?”
