This edition of Cubs World is dedicated to Jim Guleserian
THE MARK OF A SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL
by Wayne Richards
Some individuals are placed on this earth because they have something special to offer others. This was Jim to a tee! He was always ready , willing and able to help out in any way he could.
As president of Cubs World, I knew I could always ask Jim for help and always get it...from deeply rooted issues to less serious ones, I could always rely on him.
For those amongst our membership who are less familiar with this wonderful soul, he was the one who stood before us after every dinner to educate and entertainment us with a segment he called, LETS PLAY TOO. What a great play on words!
Watching Jim pull up his graphics on the big screen and treated us to an after dinner showcase teeming with facts and figures. These kind of things gave him pleasure. We felt that enthusiam, particulary when being quizzed!
Annie and I have dined with Jim and Betty and it was fun to learn that Mr. G and yours truly had connections besides the "men in blue". This came as a surprise.
Firstly, I never pictured Jim as a bartender back in the day...but that's exactly what he was! The famous London House and Mr. Kelly's were graced by his sociable personality. I frequented those places as a young musician trying to learn the ropes. He knew some of my teachers and influencers.
Secondly, we both served in the United States Navy! He was in the anchor-clanker department while I was flying around in transports trying not to spill coffee on important officials. Very different backgrounds as you can see... except for one thing. We both had similar stories regarding drill instructors!
Thirdly, he loved the performing arts! We've attended theatrical and musical events together. At Cubs World, Jim put on his acting cap to join me in a rendition of "WHO'S ON FIRST" at one of our membership meetings. It was so well received, we repeated it about a year later.
I think he was bitten by the "acting bug" and when I invited him to audition for a part in my musical, he showed up raring to go! He bonded with cast members right from the start! His deep, resonant voice was perfect for NARRATION. I was impressed that he memorized his entire part in just days!
As I've stated, Jim was a man who touched many hearts. He lived large and although we mourn his loss at the moment...just looking at his grin tells us he lived it well!

A TRIBUTE TO JIM
by Dan Marx
Since hearing about Jim Guleserian’s passing, I’ve probably had about 100 different eulogies rattling around in my head. I spoke of Jim in a tribute at our June meeting when the news was very raw to us. I have a “W” flag which I waved and spoke of all of us winning every day because we were all winners for every day we knew Jim. I spoke of how Jim was our TREASURE, and how he put his heart and soul into everything he did for Cubs World.
I remember how Dave Gran recruited Jim from Chicagoland, and how excited Jim was to be involved in anything he could within the club. When Bill McMahon stepped down from events director, Jim gladly took over. There is not a member of this club who has not learned a good deal about the Cubs from Let’s Play Too.
Jim loved meeting new members, and talking Cubs, sports or anything at all. Jim was always in love with life, in love with the Cubs, in love with his family, and mostly in love with his wife, Betty.
Betts, you were married to a giant of a man, and thank you for sharing Jim with us. Rest in peace, Jim Guleserian.

Last January, to celebrate the start of the new year, Cubs World converged on the EPIC THEATRE (Old Mill Playhouse) in Lake Sumter for a free screening of the classic motion picture, FIELD OF DREAMS. It was a fun night for all! So, since we ordinarily do not have a membership meeting in July, we invite one and all to join us for the wide screen presentation of "A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN".
The admission procedure will be the same as in January. All you need do is wear your CUBS WORLD badge and that's it! Well...actually, you might consider pants or something.
DOORS OPEN AT 5:30. PRESENTATION AT 5:45 FEATURE FILM AT 6PM. RUNNING TIME...2 HRS and 8 MINUTES.

ARE YOU SEEING RED?
by Wayne Richards
The process is scathingly simple. As you read through this newsletter, simply look for a word printed in RED. Once you locate it, write it down on a piece of paper and bring it to the next membership meeting.
It will be placed in a special jar for a drawing. There are two Publix cards on the line! You could be the proud owner of one, smiling brightly as you leave the EPIC THEATRE in Lake Sumter landing. Two people will be proclaimed winners just before our special showing of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. Good luck to everyone!

WATCH PARTIES REALLY BRING US TOGETHER
by Wayne Richards
Within the friendly confines of Gators restaurant in Brownwood, CUBS WORLD invites every member to join us for our monthly WATCH PARTY. We'd like to thank this incredible venue for hosting and taking very good care of us!
If you haven't been to a party yet, I think you're missing a great opportunity to enjoy some great food and cocktails as you socialize with other die-hards! It feels great to cheer on the Cubbies en masse! The noisier the better!
We're usually positioned near the rear of the restaurant where the Cubs World banner/flag is proudly displayed on the wall just about in the center.

BY Dan Marx and Wayne Richards
Once again, your humble newsletter team welcome you to this special corner where free expression lives!
Of course, being in the Villages, I hope some of these crazy alligators stay away!
We have reached the All-Star break and the big question is simple. How will the Cubbies do for the rest of the year? Post season hopes are high. Its a great feeling isn't it?
Please leave a comment in the box below. We always love when you speak your mind.

I've had Spam in Hawaii and I don't recommend it at all!

MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS FLOW WITH ZOOM
by Wayne Richards
Once in a while, some of our members contact me and ask why we've embraced zoom sessions. Here are several explanations and it's my honor to share them.
First of all, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many potential guests to travel. One case in point is Sue Zipay. For just over two years now, I have been in touch with this incredible human being. As an original Rockford Peach, she has desired to visit but does not have the wherewithal to do so. Trust me...this woman has stories!
Unfortunately, due to a severe illness, she cannot even join us for a zoom session at this time. However, I'm keeping in touch with her son and he has promised to keep me updated.
The point I'm making here is that when we make contact with true legends like this, its becoming more likely to procure an appearance via the big screen. Comments on these kind of presentations thus far have been very positive.
I'm sure everyone would agree that having an individual like Bob Dernier join us by internet carves the way for future celebs to join us. Of course, we will still have "in person" bookings. But the internet has made CUBS WORLD even bigger!
It's also smart budget wise. You might not be aware, but some of the players we've approached have speaking fees that surpass our entire budget! We will be able to get more bang for our buck on line. Actually, the possibilities are endless for creative programming.
These ZOOM sessions cannot take place without the help of our good friend, Chuck Lindsoe. This talented techy is constantly refining the process. He is a valuable asset to this ever-growing club!
Stay tuned Cubs World. THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

A BITTERSWEET NIGHT
by Dan Marx
Monday night, June 2nd , was one of our most memorable meetings in quite some time. Cubs World birthdays are always memorable to celebrate. This was our 8th and we celebrated with a yummy cake.
Dinner was fun, as we had Sam’s Club monster hot dogs and pizza. Great choice, Debi! Wayne went around the room interviewing all of our new members. It was so great. There were 10, and this is the lifeline of the organization , and they are all welcome to become a large part of our future growth.

[ This photo shows the Cubs World family during a ZOOM test. Nice looking folks...don't you agree?]
Our featured speaker was in a word COOL. Bobby Dernier gave us our first Zoom interview from the inside of a car. He was at a country club in Wisconsin, and took some time to tell us many great stories.
He grew up in KC, being a fellow midwesterner, and started his big league career as a shortstop in the Phillies organization. He was called up to Philadelphia in August of 1977 with his soon to be best friend, Ryne Sandberg. It seems wherever he went throughout his baseball career, Ryno was there with him. They are still great friends to this day.
Bobby Dernier is in love with life, and shows great enthusiasm for everything he has done. He was talking about being a 10 year old kid and visiting LA stadium being totally in awe of it. When he was 23 years old, he came in as a pinch runner for Pete Rose in that same stadium, and knew that he fulfilled his lifelong dream. He said that he never worked at baseball like a job. He just PLAYED baseball. Don Zimmerman loved Dernier and Ryno so much because they gave it their all on everything they did.
Bobby still loves to get to Wrigley as much as possible, and says that our 2025 team reminds him of his 1984 team. In October of 1984 the Cubs were playing the Padres in Wrigley for their first playoff appearance in 39 years. So what did Dernier do in his first leadoff at bat that day? He hit a home run deep into the left field bleachers. He said that when he rounded second base , he could feel the stadium shaking. He had never experienced that much noise!!! Thank you Bobby, we hope that you will be able to visit us in person next year.
We had another special guest! Cody Hills was just speaking here a few months ago, but we invited him back to receive the Jim Guleserian award for his incredible contributions that he has made to our club. Cody was there with his wife, Jenna.
The bittersweet part of the evening was honoring the life of Jim Guleserian. Jim passed away very suddenly Sunday , May 22nd. He lived a very full life and was passionate about things he did. He put everything he did into all of his events and his Lets Play Too with Cubs World , and there were not many fans who loved their Chicago Cubs more than Jim.
About an hour ago, I got off the phone with his wife, Betty and told her that while we were watching Bobby Dernier sitting in his car, Dernier took a sip from this big mug, which had a big P and Philly red and white on it. Nobody in the room said anything. I said to Betty that Jim would have jokingly said something to him about drinking out of a Phillies mug. She laughed and totally agreed.
Don Mulder, Wayne Richards, Jodi Sweeney, and myself all had tributes to honor Jim. Thank you for everything! We all loved you. You will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Jim.

EXCITING NEWS FOR CUBS WORLD!
A ZOOM PRESENTATION YOU MUST NOT MISS!
by Dan Marx
I am in love with history of baseball, which is why I have read “Why we love baseball” a few times.
Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s I played a game called all star baseball. The game had a board , a spinner , and paper discs that one would pick randomly to make up your team. Each team would have offensive categories like a slice of a pie, and , of course, each game player wanted Babe Ruth on their team. However he also had a big strike out part of the pie too. The Babe had a slice of the pie for his 714 homers that the spinner ended up on many times. That is how I was able to hear of the old time players. Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Three Fingers Brown, Nap Lajoie, Honus Wagner, Jimmie Foxx, and Pie Traynor, to name a few.
I don’t know that any of us saw any of those players play. But then, there was Joe DiMaggio, Hank Greenberg, and Bob Feller who became immortalized on those discs and some of us were fortunate enough to se them play.
This was my introduction to the GREATEST baseball players who made the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown , N Y. I hope that many of you have had the chance to visit. I was in total awe each time i visited.
Why am I writing this?? Cubs World is having the distinct honor of presenting JOSH RAWITCH as our featured speaker for our August 4th meeting. He is the PRESIDENT of the MLB HALL OF FAME!
This is possibly the most important speaker we have ever had. Of the 274 players in the hall, how many does he think should not be there. Who are the players he thinks should be there? Hopefully he has some tidbits about some of our beloved Cubs in the Hall.
What about Pete Rose? What about Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens just to name a few? There are so many questions. I hope you will jot some down, since a good portion of the zoom session will be a Q & A.
Josh has a very rich baseball background, and has served for over 25 years in many capacities with the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers.
This will be a very special meeting like none other that we have had. I wanted to give you a heads up so you could save the date. (We will send out flyers to everyone!)

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Herbon
This past Saturday when the Cubs played the Detroit Tigers history was made in major league baseball. This is a statistic that very few people are aware of but should be shouted out because this happened for the FIRST TIME ever!
When the Cubs took the field in the bottom of the first inning, every player 1-9 was a first round pick. Just imagine this rare event? NINE first rounders on the field in Detroit is a MLB first time event.
For the record Ryne Sanberg was drafted in the 20th round by Philadelphia in 1978. Ron Santo was NEVER drafted and signed as a amateur free agent. Kerry Wood was a 4th rounder and Bruce Sutter as taken in the 21st round in 1970 by the Washington Senators. This is just a small example how talent in baseball can rise to the top from all sorts of levels.
Here is the lineup the Cubs put on that field in Detroit on June 7th 2025.
1/ Ian Happ LF 1st round ninth overall in 2016 by the Cubs
2/ Kyle Tucker DH 1st round 5th overall pick in 2015 by Houston
3/ Seiya Suzuki RF 1st round by Hiroshima Carp in 2012
4/ Dansby Swanson SS 1st round 1st pick by Arizona in 2015
5/ Pete Crow-Armstrong CF 1st round 19th pick by NY Mets in 2020
6/ Nico Hoerner 2B 1st round 24th pick by Cubs in 2018 draft
7/ Michael Busch 1B 1st round 31st pick by LA Dodgers in 2019
8/ Matt Shaw 3B 1st round 13th pick in the 2023 draft by Cubs
9/ Reese McGuire C 1st round and was the 14th pick in 2013 by Pittsburgh Pirates
The Cubs are very fun to watch and all these players have great talent. This recent starting lineup all followed a different road map to get to the plate in Detroit. This is a perfect example of what happens when you make a trade for young players when you give away a star from your team. Right now it looks like the Cubs have found themselves with dugout filled with future All Stars for years to come. GO CUBS

COMMENTS FROM THE PREZ
Don't worry folks. I'm not resorting to old school typewriters. If that was the case, these newsletters would never be completed in time.
Sitting here at my desk, I have been reflecting on Cubs World. As I've mentioned many times, we're not just a club. We are a family!
The loss of Jim Guleserian has thrown this train a little off its track. He was a highly valuable organizer and contributor to this club and he will be missed.
But, I would also suggest that the future of Cubs World is quite bright! We have very gifted individuals on our board. We are very happy to note that some of our new members are very willing to help out.
The Cubs World board meetings are held every third month on a Monday at Colony Cottage. We invite our members to come join us and even participate in the meetings! We begin at 3 pm.
If you're interested in joining us contact me via our web site www.cubsworld.org
I'm happy to read your letter or take phone calls.
Also...to our newest members, if you'd like to have a little introductory feature story let us know. My interviews are painless...in fact...they're fun!

As always, Cubs World invites you to submit comments, ideas, reflections, recipes, remembrances...anything you like! We love to hear form you. Always!
We are enthused by some of our newer members who have expressed a desire to help out with the club. This is highly appreciated.
After all...this is YOUR club and you should always have a voice! Leave comments below and thank you!
