       SAY IT AIN'T SO JOE!
Since the start of the 2019 season, there has been an ominous prevailing wind at Wrigley.  Joe has been performing with the sword of doom over his head this year longer than the ivy clung to the wall.
He has big shoes to fill to be sure!  But when he walked into Wrigley, he created an energy and determination to win the prize and captured the hearts of Cub fans everywhere.  HE WILL BE MISSED!

Cubs Fans,

In a season full of ups and downs, we are grateful for your incredible, ongoing support. While we enjoyed several exciting wins at Wrigley Field and solid individual performances from many of our players, we struggled to deliver as a team in the moments that mattered most. Falling short of our potential and failing to make the postseason for the first time in five years was extremely disappointing for all of us. We share your desire for change and are committed to building our next championship team.

As we look forward to creating our future success, it is important we also take a moment to honor a vital part of our past five years. I join our staff, players and fans in offering a heartfelt thank you to Joe Maddon. Joe’s leadership and dedication helped ignite one of the greatest eras in Cubs baseball. He guided us to the most postseason victories in our franchise’s history and helped bring the World Series trophy home to Chicago. We are forever grateful for Joe’s immense impact on our organization, fans and city and wish him continued success and happiness.

As Theo shared during his end-of-season press conference, we are focused on strengthening our roster, defining our team identity and fostering a culture of accountability to help us return to championship-caliber form. Selecting our new manager is just one of the many actions we’ll take. While it’s premature to predict the extent of change, we will be open-minded, thoughtful and thorough as we explore new opportunities and evaluate all levels of our operations to identify areas of improvement. I’m confident our Baseball Operations staff will make the right decisions to maximize our opportunity to win now while also ensuring our long-term success.

Whether we’re working to field a competitive team or preserve Wrigley Field, we keep you at the heart of everything we do. We don’t take your support for granted and will continue to find impactful ways to enhance your experience and provide best-in-class service at our ballpark and Gallagher Way.

While we’re already working to address our challenges, we understand October should be a time for meaningful baseball games not promises of offseason action. We appreciate your faith in our team and look forward to enjoying more division titles and deep postseason runs together. We believe that’s what we’re capable of and what you deserve.

Go Cubs,

Tom Ricketts

One of the things we enjoy about Cubs World is learning more about baseball:

Over the past year we have heard amazing stories about how much the business of baseball has changed in our lifetime:
*  George Yankowski being fired by Connie Mack because he asked for a $15/month raise when he returned from WW 2

*  Hall-of-Famer Sam McDowell having to stock grocery store shelves in the off-season to earn a living in the 1950's
*  Rick Reichart receiving a signing bonus greater than every MLB player's salary in 1964.
*  Outrageous contracts today for Cub players that fail to make the playoffs

   BLEACHER BUM REPORT
         BY JACK HEBRON
The Cubs sure hit the skids in those last two weeks of the season. Was it poor relief pitching? Poor performance on the road? Lack of a good lead-off man? Injuries? You could take any of those reasons and you would be right! The bitter end to the season started on September 17th when the Cubs lost the first of nine games in a row to Cincinnati inside the "friendly confines". The snowball of losses would not end until they got a win in St.Louis on September 27th. But, as you can imagine it really didn't matter when they won because the Cubs were already eliminated from the post season.
I can only imagine what is going to happen in this off season. Big changes and lots of name changes will happen for sure. The 2020 season will see the Cubs open up in Milwaukee on March 28th with a three game series. The Wrigley Field home opener will be against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 30th also for three games. When you look at the schedule for next June your eyes will not be deceiving you! Yes, the Cubs will be playing two games against the Cardinals in LONDON, ENGLAND! The two games will be held on June 13 and 14 at London Stadium. So, if your looking for the "road trips of road trips" this is the one to take next year!
Also just like this year the Cubs will finish the season out in St. Louis on September 27th. Okay, I have to say now GO BEARS!!

      RICK REICHART CAPTIVATES MEETING
                         by Dan Marx

Over 60 Cubs World members were treated to a fascinating story by Rick Reichart Monday night 10/7 at Colony Cottage Rec center. Looking very trim, you might think he could almost suit up and play today.

Rick was the most sought after athlete in the country in 1964, and he started a bidding war the likes of which had never been seen before, and were never seen again. He ended up signing with the L.A. Angels for a bonus of $200,000 which was more than any MLB player was being paid.

That was so outrageous that the MLB draft started the next year, and that was the end of bidding wars.

The cool part is that as a 21 year old kid, he was incredibly well connected. He dated Dinah Shore before Burt Reynolds did. He had a friendship with David Eisenhower, and because of that friendship, President Nixon asked Rick if he would date his daughter, Tricia. The whole Nixon family even went to a baseball game just to see Rick play.

Rick played 11 years in the majors with the White Sox, the Royals, the Angels, and the Washington Senators ( Ted Williams was the manager at that time).

I think he could have told stories into the wee hours of the night.

A big highlight of the meeting was the presentation off the All Star awards to Wayne Richards and our dinner crew for the hard work they put into every meal that they serve.

2019 Cubs World All-Stars

Cubs World honors its best performing team members at the end of the MLB season instead of midseason.
Two awards were made in the October Members Meeting for extraordinary contributions to the club:
      Wayne Richards:  "The Chatter" Newsletter
Jan Jackman, Ken Suchy, Bob Smith, Karen Parrish:  Member Meeting Dinner Team

The entire club extends its THANKS to these members that make our club meetings taste so good.

When my wife Annie and I moved to the Villages just over a year ago, we had no idea which clubs and activities we would participate in.  We were grateful that a CUBS club existed because as life time fans, we needed to maintain a solid connection to the team we love.
With some anthem singing experience along with a little journalism under my belt, I have been able to put these skills go use.  Along with Dan Marx and Chuck lindsoe , our goal is to put together a monthly newsletter that is both informative and entertaining.  I will honor this unexpected certificate by celebrating the Cubs and baseball with every newsletter we release.

Our Monday, November 4th meeting will be held at Colony Cottage Rec Center from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM  Bruce Miles from the Chicago Herald will be our guest speaker. He's here to share all the stories you'd ever want to hear about the Cubs. Members and guests will be charged $12 with advance registration. Tickets at the door will be $15. A catered meal is included. Please register and pay by Wednesday October 30th.
This will also be a very interactive meeting. As the late Pat Pieper used to say " get your pencils and scorecards ready".  In this case, get your pencils and questions ready, because Bruce is ready to stay here as long as needed to answer all of your questions.

A CUBS WORLD EXTRA!
Do you recognize this gentleman?  He is an important part of Wrigley Field history.
He is stadium announcer, Pat Peiper!
He first moved from Hanover, Germany to Colorado with his family, but in 1904 at the age of 17, Pat headed to Chicago where he found work as a vendor when the Cubs stilled played on the West side.
Wherever the Cubs played, Peiper stayed with them.  He basically pestered owner, Charles Wheegman for the announcers job.  He got the job and the rest is history.
At first, the job was more difficult than you might think because Peiper had to run up and down the aisles making announcements via megaphone.  In 1932, Pat stated, "Getting a public address system installed has saved my life!"
  Pat Peiper passed in 1974.

  CUBS ORGANIST GARY PRESSY RETIRES!
Gary Pressy has two passions...the organ and baseball.  Actually, he wanted to play ball but Gary stated, "I couldn't hit the fast balls!"  So he stuck with music.
After graduating high school Gary played organ for Loyola and De Paul university, as well as the Chicago Sting.  He developed a reputation for performing music that enhances a sporting event.  "I'm blessed with a good ear, " said Pressy.
Gary was hired by the Cub organization on April Fool's Day of 1987.  After the Cubs won the big prize in 2016, Gary played his organ in Grant Park for a celebration that Cub Fan's everywhere will keep forever in their heart.  Thank you Gary for providing that heartbeat with a wonderful soundtrack!

BASEBALL FUN FACTS!

John Dillinger once played professional baseball.  Although he never made it as far as the majors, it is recorded that he was a decent second baseman.  Of course, being one of the most dangerous men in America way back then, I think people would've let him play ANYWHERE HE WANTED!

Picture
This photo features the shortest baseball player to ever play in the majors.  His name EDDIE GAEDEL.  Born in Chicago, Eddie was three feet...seven inches tall when he played in 1951.  He also worked in airplane construction because he was small enough to do riveting work by crawling in the wings.

If you are a baseball card collector and have a Honus Wagner card complete with a white border you have what is considered to be the holy grail of cards.  It is worth, at least, ONE MILLION dollars!  There are only 50 to 75 cards currently in circulation.
If you have this treasure it is recommended that you place it in a nice clean card sleeve.  But, keep in mind, even slightly damaged, this edition still might rake in a cold million!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT "soaking" is"?  No...it's not this dude in a tub.  It's a play in baseball.  Ever hear of it?
It's no longer legal, but there was a time when a ball could be thrown at a runner to get him out if he was off base!  This was a common play during the early days of the game.  Throw a ball at a player today and it usually starts a bench clearing brawl!

Picture
Did you know that actor Robert Redford attended Colorado university on a baseball scholarship?
His motion picture THE NATURAL is considered to be one of the finest baseball films of all times.  His character was based a a real life player named, Roy Hobbs, who is recorded as having an amazing skill set in baseball.
