BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Hebron
It’s already been more than a month since the eventful 2021 trade deadline and we now have greater perspective on the fallout. So let's take a peek at how the old friends are doing.
1. Joc Pederson has been a solid addition to NL East-leading Braves.
2. Anthony Rizzo hit a home run in his first game with the Yankees. Soon after he tested positive for COVID19. His defense has been stellar as usual at first base. His hitting average is hovering around .265.
3. Kris Bryant who was traded to the SF Giants, has adapted well to his new team. Kris has had some minor injuries that has prevented him from playing in a few games. None of which is serious. He too hit a home run for the Giants on his arrival. Since the trade he is batting around .267 and has 7 home runs. Kris wanted to play on the west coast. The giants have a great team and are 40 games over 500. Will Bryant get his contract after the playoffs? Time will tell.
4. Javy Baez is having a interesting time in the Big Apple. He has not changed his stripes since he arrived with the Mets. His average is around .253 and he like in Chicago keeps swinging for the fences. He should finish with around 32 home runs for the season. He is another player who is looking for the big contract after this season.
Next month I will go over are latest Cubs arrivals and the prospects we received from all these trades. But, for now is Frank Schwindel for real??

"I'LL BE FRANK WITH YOU!"
by Wayne Richards
This was supposed to be an uplifting year for baseball, but in particular, for the Cubs. There was excitement in the air because a "full season" became a reality. There WAS joy in Muddville!
I suppose we could sit around as arm chair critics and conjecture as to what happened this year. But even reporters in the trenches never really know completely what's going on in the locker room.
We all knew changes were coming. We didn't expect the surgery to be so drastic. But it is what it is and somehow there must be a spot of sunshine that could pierce through the darkness. I believe there is.
Across town, the White Sox are headed to the playoffs with the big prize in their eyes. So what should we be so happy about? It is ex Cubs that are helping the team be the success they are at the moment! Craig Kimbrel and Ryan Tepera along with former Cubs prospects, Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease are lending additional energy to a young team.
But there is one other factor that brings a smile to my face and perhaps it will do the same for you in this season of frowns. In a recent interview Frank Thomas stated , "Chicago will always be a Cubs town!"

LABOR DAY MEMBERSHIP MEETING REPORT
by Guest Contributor Jim Guleserian
Monday, September 6 was Labor Day. Cubs World met for its first ever membership meeting in September.
The meeting opened with a stirring medley of Americana songs by our own Wayne Richards. Included were: This Land is Your Land, Proud to be an American, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, and a new song O America which Wayne discovered on YouTube. Following that was a dinner of box lunches from Publix gathered together by our food team, Dan and Mary Ellen Marello.

Following that was a dinner of box lunches from Publix gathered together by our food team, Dan and Mary Ellen Marello.

Jim Guleserian presented in Let’s Play, Too, a rundown on all the new prospects we got in the trade extravaganza that took place at the end of July as well as the draft that happened in mid-July.
Jim also asked for everybody to think of things they might want to do as a club during the offseason when we are not having game watches. Look elsewhere in the chatter for a place to let us know.
After 50/50 and red word prizes were awarded, the featured speaker of the evening, Bobby Floyd, took the floor. He immediately told us that our highest rated prospect, Pete Crow-Armstrong (who Bobby knows from the Mets organization) is one of the hardest working players he has ever known. Bobby also talked about being a member of the Orioles in 1969 and watching the National League standings to see who they might be playing in the World Series. (We all know what happened there.) He also talked about getting his first major league hit of Villager Sudden Sam McDowell. He brought up life in the minors “Back in the day” where some players would refuse a jump to the big leagues because they would take a pay cut by losing the endorsements they had in their minor league cities.
Bobby’s wife Melody took over and talked about life as a big league wife and mother. And how she knew nothing about baseball until she met Bobby in her home town of Kansas City. It was a true treat to hear from a player’s wife for the first time.

ROGER LOVES BASEBALL, PEOPLE AND COMMUNICATING
by Wayne Richards
Anyone who has listened to WGN radio on a regular basis has heard the deeply resilient voice of Roger Badesch reporting the news through the years, particularly on the over-night shift. He also was very good at interacting with whomever was on the air in a personable and interesting manner.
One could say that communication was Roger's destiny. "Even when I was very young, I knew I wanted to be a broadcaster, "said Badesch. "There was absolutely no doubt in my mind!"

Roger was born in Chicago, but the family moved to Evanston when he was four. "I lived in Evanston for 25 years and Chicago for 44." It's quite evident Roger loves Chicago and baseball! Whenever company stops by Roger and his wife of 46 years, Bridget, install a Vienna Beef sign and concession card by the door. Its not everywhere that one can be greeted by such warm neon splendor!
With regard to baseball, Roger was very diplomatic when asked which Chicago team he prefers. "I love Chicago baseball, "he boasted." Roger also confessed that the first games he ever witnessed were at Comiskey Park. "But I attended games more frequently at Wrigley because of the atmosphere, " said Roger. "I took my mother there for "Ladies Day" games.

"I took my mother there for "Ladies Day" games.

WGN covered both the Cubs and the Sox games. They would even broadcast both teams at the same time, alternating back and forth. "That broadcasting technique was quite advanced for the time! Watching channel nine was a passion."
Rogers desire and craving for radio grew day by day. One time while at Wrigley, Roger found out how to get up to the broadcast booth via a maze of ladders and steps. There were no sky boxes at the time.
The great Lou Boudreau and Vince Lloyd were preparing to call a game when they noticed the youngster standing there fascinated by everything that was happening. Lou and Vince not only let him sit with them for the entire game, but they presented him with the game sheets and all the paperwork used in the game... neatly packaged in an envelope. It is a prized possession. Roger describes that experience as like sitting in a DREAM WORLD!
Roger recalls a time when he was assigned to put together a special promotion to announce upcoming events scheduled by city hall. Harry Carey and Steve Stone were the personalities brought in to make announcements.
"I actually liked the final edit, " said Roger. "But, unfortunately, it was never aired due to Harry's beer drinking and Steve Stone's cigar smoking. I am the only individual that is in possession of the finished product. I'm also proud to say that Steve instructed me how to properly smoke cigars."
Mr. Badesch , like most people, has a great admiration and respect for Ron Santo. "I met him at a special Juvenile Diabetes event and was very impressed that he stuck around to sign autographs for every last individual!," said Roger. "He was a tremendous man to be near."
Roger has many things to be thankful for. A wonderful family, including two children and two grand children.
He also has recently written and released a new book entitled, THE UNPLANNED LIFE, available on Amazon. The book, in both printed and audio form, includes many tales about his upbringing, including a number of tragedies. He has also had a fight with cancer. In revealing these hardships with clarity and honesty, he has received comments from individuals who claim that they have been helped and comforted by his reflections. I certainly can understand why. He is an outstanding communicator. He is a lover of people... a lover of baseball and somebody I'm proud to call a friend.
