EVERYBODY LOVES CUBS WORLD

I hope that all of our members had a chance to read the Villages magazine which just came out yesterday 7/7. I think that they usually have these magazines at the rec centers.
All I can say is WOW !!!!! Thank you John Henderson for a wonderful piece. I am still very emotional 24 hours later, and this story points out how far we have come, and how much our club has to offer in the coming years. When we had our first membership meeting in June of 2017, I could only dream that we would still be here in July of 2026. Next June will be our TEN year anniversary !!!
Thanks to all who contributed to the article. On the bright side , I was particularly thrilled to see Bill McMahon’s and Gary Koca’s contributions from the Chicago area, and on the very sad side we dearly missed not having the late Dave Gran and the late Jim Guleserian here to have added their contributions.

On Friday, June19th , our local sports writer, Jammel Cutler, wrote an editorial on the meaning to New York Knicks fans of having their dreams fulfilled by finally being able to lift the championship trophy after 53 seasons of heartbreaks. Heartbreaks that they shared with theirs best friends, their fathers, their grandfathers, and many other family members.
The parade through the Canyon of heroes was over but will always be emblazoned in their minds.
For us, as die-hard Cubs fans, it was different. This was not about 53 seasons of emptiness, and hearing stories about the “what ifs”. This was about 108 seasons of Cubs history that we couldn’t ask our fathers to relate to us. To tell us about winning the 1908 World Series championship. To us, growing up in the late 1940s and 1950s there were no “ what ifs”! We just stunk. It seems like we’d watch the Yankees and the Dodgers every season in the Series, and we’d learn to dislike them A LOT !
As we would get better starting in 1969, that’s when the heartaches started to come in. 1969, of course, being the first heartache. 1984 gave us our first chance to play in the World Series since 1945. Then it was the “Steve Bartman game” in 2003 that took the wind out our sails.
My good friend and cofounder of Cubs World the late Dave Gran wrote a book about that 2016 championship season called “I did believe “. All of us long time Cub fans had so many emotions bottled up inside of us that just exploded when Kris Bryant made that throw to Anthony Rizzo to seal the championship! We all could have written an article that day on what that moment meant to us.
The last 10 years seems like a long time ago. At the time we thought that our dynasty had begun. We are hungry again, having tasted that glorious championship nectar. Very hungry.

The Chicago Cubs' top selection this year was Ole Miss right-hander Cade Townsend with the No. 23 overall pick. So where does he slot into the bigger farm system picture?
The Cubs ranked No. 25 in the latest survey before the draft, and that was before Pedro Ramírez lost his prospect status, so an influx of talent is needed. Let's unpack how all the Day 1 action unfolded for the Cubs, and how it changes the look of their system.
Day ONE results for this years MLB draft:
1st round, No. 23 overall: RHP Cade Townsend, Ole Miss
2nd round, No. 62 overall: OF Caden Sorrell, Texas A&M
2nd round, No. 75 overall: 1B Myles Bailey, Florida State
3rd round, No. 98 overall: RHP Carson Jasa, Nebraska
4th round, No. 126 overall: RHP Dylan Marionneaux, Northwestern State
The Cubs added one of the most electric arms from the 2026 draft class in Cade Townsend. A slightly undersized frame and some effort in his mechanics do create reliever risk, but his stuff is big-league caliber, and he immediately becomes one of the standout arms in their system. They also added two of the most productive power hitters in the nation this spring in Texas A&M outfielder Caden Sorrell and Florida State first baseman Myles Bailey
Sorrell (1.177 OPS, 23 HR, 76 RBI) was a standout three-year performer in the SEC, while Bailey (1.494 OPS, 13 HR, 33 RBI) was on his way to a monster draft-eligible sophomore season before suffering an ankle injury after 26 games.

Pitching development has not been a strength for the Cubs over the years, and even exceptions like Justin Steele and Cade Horton have dealt with injury issues. Can 2025 draft picks Dominick Reid (third round) and Kaleb Wing (fourth round) help reverse that trend?
Second-Half Outlook:

I'm willing to bet that one way many of us celebrate them is with KNICK-KNACKS, bobble-heads and a chotchke or two. (That sounds like a song from the fifties!)
Some of these items are kept hidden while others are proudly displayed museum style. (Right Dave?) Congrats on reaching over 2,000 in your collection!
The strange statue that sits proudly in a corner of my office is our official mascot named, Chief Iwanawin. The late, great Jim Guluserian introduced this crazy piece of wood to our club. The headphones were not included. He just likes to listen to the tracks I'm recording for a new music project.
You can also see a couple of cars from my CHICAGO CUBS train set. It is an actual running unit! I've had it completely set up once but keep most of it now stored in its proper containers.
Anyway, the reason I've shed light on these items is to introduce the possibility of a "SHOW AND TELL" section in this newsletter!

A FAMILIAR FACE IN THE CROWD

Anyone who has visited Wrigley Field on a regular, or even semi-regular basis, would most likely see familiar faces. For instance, when I was a kid attending games, I recognized the barker at the front entrance pushing programs.
It is not uncommon for people to know some of the vendors by name if you're at the "friendly confines" often enough. In fact, a couple of years back, this publication featured a story about one particular vendor who had turned very ill. A group of Cubs fans raised funds for his hospital care.
A very familiar and happy face has been a fixture at Wrigley. He is known as "The Pink Hat" guy. Donning his special cap, he could be recognized sitting behind home plate.
His name is James Rodney Anixter. He was a 60-year -long ticket holder. He started wearing the pink hat to demonstrate via television for his wife that he was actually attending the game!
James founded a company called AZ WIRE AND CABLE. His business practices through the years earned him the respect of colleagues in the electrical industry. He was also a very strong "family-oriented" and charitable soul.
With his recent passing, a number of suggestions have materialized as to a proper manner in which to honor memory. Here are several.
1. Paint his seat pink.
2. Design and position a pink flag to wave in the wind.
3. Have his family members sing the seventh inning stretch.
4. Have a pink hat day at Wrigley.

i What a crazy year this has been thus far. Our men in blue seem to be on some kind of strange roller ride. I still can't figure out exactly what triggered Pete-Crow-Armstrong to improve enough to get into the ALL STARS. Speaking of which....
THE ALL- STAR BREAK
It seems to have come very quickly this year and I'm happy that Pete is in. I'm very saddened that other "Men in Blue" are not. There are many pieces in this season's puzzle that need to be found or replaced.
I'm not enthused about the All-Star game for another reason. This yearly classic is scheduled for Wrigley next year and there is a very strong possibility there might not be baseball all due to salary cap issues. So, there we go. The Cubs may be stuck in another waiting game. Let's all hope for the best.
VOLUNTEERING
No matter what happens next year, there is one thing I would like everyone to think about. ASK NOT WHAT CUBS WORLD CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR CUBS WORLD!
I have been very pleased to see that some of our newer members have taken an interest in giving an assist when and where needed. As president, I would like to see an "AT LARGE" member added to the board. We love hearing new ideas and suggestions. Being an '"AT LARGE MEMBER" would give you a full voice in decisions.
I want to make sure that CUBS WORLD grows and develops even further as a foremost club in the Villages! We can't do that without your help.

THE FUTURE OF CUBS WORLD
I think the future of Cubs World is extremely bright! This year we have been featured in the Daily News, the Villages Magazine and even on a podcast! Based on the reputation we have far and wide, I think there will be great days ahead, even if darkness descends due to a strike next year.
WHAT IF?
If there is a strike, we are perfectly capable of entertaining ourselves. By the way, there might be a few more ballplayers willing to join us either in person or by zoom! We'll all have to stay tuned and see what happens.
FIELD TRIPS
A rather interesting suggestion has been made by a few of our members. People who participated in our bus trip to the baseball museum in St. Petersburg were a bit taken with how beautiful the area was. A suggestion has been made that we return just to spend the day in the area! After all, there are numerous restaurants, a pier, a classic hotel and many shops to explore.
I'll take a little poll during our August meeting and we'll see what's what.
CULINARY IDEAS?
Our "CHEF GIRL R WONDERFUL", Debi Orchard, has done an extraordinary job arranging meals for our meetings. But we are always open to ideas from our members. Do you have a taste for something? Tell us what it is please. Debi is an outstanding coordinator and will take your ideas and turn them into something special!
BEAN BAG SUGGESTION
Our bean bag night recently was a huge success! So how can we dial things up a notch? Easy. I will be discussing an evening of Bean Bag Baseball playing against another club. The cardinals perhaps?
THE MEDIA CONNECTIONS
The executive editor of this newsletter is our good friend Dan Marx. Through much of his efforts, connections have been made with members of the press who have become interested and even supportive of our club on a continual basis. Even beyond the newspapers and magazines, I was just about to create a weekly CUBS WORLD segment on a sports show broadcasting from Eustis. We were all set to go as a matter of fact. But the station quietly changed format and that's the end of that story. But fear not! We have very solid friendships with the press and that's why I think Cubs World will continue to be recognized vividly in the years to come!

THE FUTURE OF CUBS WORLD
I think the future of Cubs World is extremely bright! This year we have been featured in the Daily News, the Villages Magazine and even on a podcast! Based on the reputation we have far and wide, I think there will be great days ahead, even if darkness descends due to a strike next year.
WHAT IF?
If there is a strike, we are perfectly capable of entertaining ourselves. By the way, there might be a few more ballplayers willing to join us either in person or by zoom! We'll all have to stay tuned and see what happens.
FIELD TRIPS
A rather interesting suggestion has been made by a few of our members. People who participated in our bus trip to the baseball museum in St. Petersburg were a bit taken with how beautiful the area was. A suggestion has been made that we return just to spend the day in the area! After all, there are numerous restaurants, a pier, a classic hotel and many shops to explore.
I'll take a little poll during our August meeting and we'll see what's what.
CULINARY IDEAS?
Our "CHEF GIRL R WONDERFUL", Debi Orchard, has done an extraordinary job arranging meals for our meetings. But we are always open to ideas from our members. Do you have a taste for something? Tell us what it is please. Debi is an outstanding coordinator and will take your ideas and turn them into something special!
BEAN BAG SUGGESTION
Our bean bag night recently was a huge success! So how can we dial things up a notch? Easy. I will be discussing an evening of Bean Bag Baseball playing against another club. The cardinals perhaps?
THE MEDIA CONNECTIONS
The executive editor of this newsletter is our good friend Dan Marx. Through much of his efforts, connections have been made with members of the press who have become interested and even supportive of our club on a continual basis. Even beyond the newspapers and magazines, I was just about to create a weekly CUBS WORLD segment on a sports show broadcasting from Eustis. We were all set to go as a matter of fact. But the station quietly changed format and that's the end of that story. But fear not! We have very solid friendships with the press and that's why I think Cubs World will continue to be recognized vividly in the years to come!

Disgusted that the Home Run Derby is only aired on NETFLIX! For an industry that is struggling for fans, they sure make things difficult. I'll have more to say on this later. GO CUBBIES!!!!!!!!
