FROM THE DESK OF DON MULDER
The club needs to give a big shout-out to Dan and Mary Ellen Marrello.
They are our new Dinner Team leaders that select and arrange for the
catered meal in our Member Meetings.
It's an important time for socializing and we make a real effort to make
the meal something special. Ric Mitchell kept us all laughing, but the
Marrello's kept us all well fed. Their great dinner from Oakwood, and
a big Cubs World birthday cake to top it all off made the day!
It was the first time the Marrello's were in charge, so it looks like we can
continue to look forward to being well served. They are in need of another couple to help... so think about asking them if you could join in the fun.

THE BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Hebron
The Cubs season is about half over and soon some big decisions will have to be made about who stays and who leaves team. The top wage earners on the Cubs are Jason Hayward, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Greg Kimbrel, Kyle Hendricks, Javier Baez, Zach Davies and Wilson Contreras. Just these NINE players make up 75% of the Cubs forty man roster. That payroll in 2021 is $160,000,000 give or take the price of a frosty malt back in 1969.
Rizzo is signed his big contract for eight years in 2020. Kimbrel has one year left on his $14 million deal. Hayward makes the most on the team at $21 million and has 3 years left on his contract. He is by far the #1 target to get traded if they can swing a deal. This is way to much money for a player who has the golden gloves but not the bat to go with it.
The Cubs currently have the 12th highest payroll in baseball. Paying the big bucks doesn't guarantee a winning
team. Just ask the NY Yankees! The team needs to keep Kris Bryant who looks great this year. Baez turned down a huge contract recently so I wouldn't be surprised to see him on another team. Hendricks has one year left and will be back in 2022. Wilson Contreras I feel will get a big contract when this season is over. What the Cubs are hoping for is a future star to step up and help with the payroll problem.
I'm glad it's not me making these decisions!

MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS ONE TO REMEMBER
by Dan Marx
Over 80 members showed up for the June membership meeting at Colony Cottage Rec Center. It was good to see the bigger crowds again. This wasn’t just any membership meeting, this was our 4th anniversary meeting. Dan Marx passed around a scrapbook chronicling all of the Daily Sun articles, which helped to put the club on the map.
We had a delicious catered dinner from Oakwood and all celebrated by singing happy birthday to ourselves while enjoying a yummy anniversary cake.
Jim Gulesarian expanded our Cubbie knowledge with Let’s Play Too, and then we were tested with Cubs IQ. Then, the featured entertainment was Ric Mitchell and Juke Box Bingo. Ric and his wife, Mary had everybody singing all night long keeping up with the oldies. It was great fun.
The evening ended with money giveaways with the 50/50 raffle and the 4 Publix gift cards for guessing the newsletter “red word” correctly. And the outstanding Cubs picture by our local artist was then raffled off.

A STORY OF JIM...GYMS...GIN...and a Joyful life!
by Wayne Richards
In Chicago, there once was a magical place called Riverview. It boasted of a rather challenging roller coaster called the “BOBS” as well as a parachute ride designed not for the faint of heart. One brave soul who partook of both experiences is our very own JIM GULESERIAN. “I remember being on the parachute and realizing I was very high sitting on a plank of wood!” recalled Jim.
When he wasn’t busy shooting the shoots or riding a flying car, Jim attended Lane Tech High School and graduated from there in 1966. Moving on to college Jim became a physical education major. However, the winds of change arrived. Said Jim, “I became a representative of the Navy.
Jim has always been interested in sports. “Baseball entered my life while watching the 1955 World Series on television “ said Jim. By age seven, he was a member of a Boy’s Athletic club in which he played a myriad of sports. He also played with neighborhood chums. “We sometimes played baseball in tennis courts!” said he.
It was in 1979 that Jim met a young lady named Betty who became the love of his life. They connected at a Palatine based disco called DISCONNECTION. Jim was under their employ as a mixologist at the time. His bartending skills were also evident at two legendary night clubs...the London House and Mr. Kelly's in 1974 and 75.
Together, they had three children. First is James (40) married to Danielle (40) with two children, Nolan (10) and Declan (6). Next is Melissa Verdecchia (45) married to Lou (48). They have four children starting with triplets...Caroline , Kate and Lauren (15) and Leo (16). Finally, there is Christina Murphy (48) married to Dave (48) with sons Jack(23) and Noah (20).
Sports is definitely infused in their lives. Christina is a Physical education teacher in Kansas. Melissa has been kept running raising triplets. Jim played football, ran cross country in track and wrestled.
Anyone who has observed Jim with microphone in hand at Cubs World membership meetings presenting his “LET’S PLAY TOO” segment will realize that he is not a shy individual. “I’m not afraid to talk in front of people, “ said Jim. “I’ve been told that I have a good voice for broadcasting.”
There was a time when Mr. G actually considered such a career. As a matter of fact, Jim would render play by play commentary at his son’s wrestling meets. Said Jim, “I have spoken in front of many people in very large rooms and they always had to turn my microphone down!”
Certainly, Jim projects well. But perhaps even he did not project that he would successfully enter the computer field as a software tester and consultant for Sears and Mcdonald’s.
Now settled in the Villages and a member of Cubs World since its inception, Jim still displays his gift of oratory by presenting stats and figures for passionate Cub fans in entertaining fashion. He will occasionally offer opinions during a discussion, but he is always more interested in what other people have to say.
However, CUBS WORLD CHATTER now presents a series of questions asked of Jim during a recent interview. We call this the CHATTER LIGHTNING ROUND. Short questions and answers. Ready?
CHATTER: Who is your favorite Cub player of all time?
JIM: Ernie Banks
CHATTER: Any favorite current player?
JIM: That would be Hendricks.
CHATTER: What is your favorite baseball movie?
JIM: It Happens Every Spring with Ray Milland and Paul Douglas.
CHATTER: What is your greatest memory of Wrigley Field?
JIM: Sitting in the right field bleachers day after day. I also enjoyed a special Wrigley tour.
CHATTER: What changes are needed at Wrigley?
JIM: More bathrooms. Also, angle certain sections of seats more toward the action.
CHATTER: What do you think of the infusion of technology into the game?
JIM: I like the fact that they do re-plays. But, I’m not a fan of the digital box around home plate.
Jim Guleserian’s voice is a recognizable and welcomed one at Cubs World meetings. What better individual is there to bring out Cubbie occurrences?

RUMORS OF HIS DEMISE ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED!
Jim Anixster is a very familiar Wrigley Field figure who has been frequenting the "friendly confines" since 1967! The warm and friendly businessman seems to complete the mosaic of fans who ordinarily pack the place.
According to some confusion on twitter and facebook, it was reported that Anixster had passed. Even relatives spread misinformation. Jim's grandson discovered the mistake and has been distributing correct information.
Of course seats are limited currently and Anixter's decision to stay away for a while is due to his doctor's recommendation to stay away until full capacity returns. In November of 2019 it was discovered that he had a blockage in his heart. While getting treatment, he developed an infection in his lungs.
As you can see, Jim has had to play it safe in the shadow of covid. So, despite a deep frustration, particularly due to the fact that he missed opening day, he will be absent until further notice. Get better Jim. We need to see you in the stands.
NOTE....JIM'S FIRST PINK CAP WAS ONE HE PICKED UP AT THE 1990 ALL STAR GAME AS A PROMOTION. HE KEPT WEARING IT SO HIS WIFE COULD LOCATE HIM ON TV AND KNOW THAT HE WAS AT THE BALL PARK.

ROSS IS A GREAT BOSS
Tending to the chores of keeping the Chicago Cubs team moving along in a season of injuries must feel like juggling bowling balls to Dave Ross. Being a man who pays attention to details, he has become well-liked and very responsible. He even picks up coffee for his co-workers.
Here is a question for Cubs World members. Do you think Ross will ever take us to a World Series victory? WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

WHAT WAS THAT NOISE?
by Wayne Richards
On June 11th, seismologists all over the country detected ground movement. It wasn't from various plates , fissures or fault lines. It came from a thunderous noise emanating from the friendly confines.
A full house of fans can generate a devastatingly powerful audio event. Even on the hottest of days, this joyous noise can send chills up and down one's spine.
My friends, we have all come through some dark days. The heart of Wrigley is beating once again. The Cubs are on a roll. May life continue to return to normal and may the Cubbies take this energy to the top! GO CUBBIES!
