THAT SEASON DIDN'T TURN OUT TOO WELL.  Did it?
With changes in the wind and Joe Maddon riding off into the west (literally) Cubs fans are nervous as hell..as they should be.  Once again, it's restructuring time.
This re-build will actually be from top to bottom!  But keep this in mind...the powers-that-be want the big prize as much as you do.
2020 is going to be a very interesting and entertaining season...and THAT...IS WHAT BASEBALL SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT!

HE'S IN!  HE'S IT!  DO YOU APPROVE OR NOT ?
The Chicago Cubs hiring of David Ross as the new manager has stirred quite a bit of debate amongst fans everywhere.  Some think he's the perfect choice.  Others think he will be nothing more than a cheer leader.  Still others think he's a "yes" man for Epstein.  TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!  WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

RETIRED JOURNALIST BRUCE MILES CAPTIVATES NOVEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING
                                by Dan Marx
Cubs World members were treated to a Chicago sports media rock star in Bruce Miles, Monday night November 4th at Mulberry Grove rec Center. Bruce has been the dean of all Chicago Cubs sportswriters, as he has spent the last 22 years covering the Cubs. He was thrilled to see a full house that night with over 100 members present.

His first stop was at our member's lending library where he signed a copy of the Harry Caray book that he wrote. He was very impressed with the library, and he promised to send some additions to it.
Bruce spoke for about 45 minutes, and gave the audience many looks into what really has happened within the Cubs organization , especially recently. He talked about the disappointing year that we all experienced, and gave his thoughts about Joe Maddon, David Ross, and Kris Bryant just to name a few. He took an informal poll about what we thought about substance abusers being elected into the Hall of Fame. He then ended the evening walking into the audience, and fielding questions for some time.
Jim Guleserian ended the evening with some great facts in Lets Play Too. He entertained and enlightened us with fun Cubs trivia.

The Year 2020 will open with exciting opportunities for Cubs World members.
    6 January    John Magnusson

College Baseball Hall of Fame inductee as UF catcher and later as
coach, followed by a 23 year career as Chief Umpire in the SEC.
Personal friend of another well-known UF catcher, "Grampa Rossy"
with endless stories about MLB stars from the SEC.

20 January    Dynamic Dogs of The Villages
A special show by one of the most popular clubs in The Villages for
one of the best clubs in The Villages.  It trains service dogs and holds
just four shows per year with not more than one per month as part of
the training.  It's the first show of the year and will feature dogs in Cubs
dress doing baseball routines they are busy learning right now.

   3 February    David Rapp
This author, journalist, and newsroom executive is returning for an
encore visit to Cubs World.  A year ago he discussed his book "Tinker
to Evers to Chance" and left an autographed copy in our library.  This
time he will tell us about his seminar at the 2019 spring training camp
on "Four Origin Stories of the Chicago Cubs."

    2 March      Lee Elia
Cubs player and manager is coming to tell us about his days with players
like Banks, Santo, Williams and others in the 1960's when most of us lived
in Chicago with high hopes for a pennant.  Lee promises to also tell us the
inside story of how he became one of the most infamous Cubs in history.

THE PERFECT WAY TO GET THROUGH THE OFF SEASON!
A company named DUGOUT MUGS has created this special shot glass.  This "on line" novelty item has been officially approved by major league baseball.
Made in the United States, these one ounce gems can also be personalized.  Turn around time is 3 to 4 days if you wish to order.
Two other teams have arranged to have products produced.....the RED SOX and the YANKEES.  Maybe we should have some made for CUBS WORLD?
This might make a great stocking stuffer.

JUST IN TIME FOR THANKSGIVING, CUBS WORLD CHATTER PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE FIRST ANNUAL WINNER OF THE WORST BASEBALL PLAYER EVER!  THE TURKEY AWARD GOES TO....
Charley Comisky.  He is not only considered to be the worst player, but also the worst manager and owner.  This official recognition comes courtesy of a publication called THE SPORTSTER.
As manager of his own team, he would often place himself in the lineup.  There was one small problem.  He couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a baseball bat!  Perhaps it is best that he remains a shadow from the dark days of baseball.

CUBS LOOK ACROSS THE PACIFIC FOR A NEW CENTER FIELDER
The Chicago Cubs organization has expressed interest in SHOGO AKIYAMA, a gold glove winning player from the Saitama Seibu Lions o Nippon Professional Baseball.  (Say all that fast a few times!)
As a center fielder he is a Gold Glove winner and said to have very fast hands, good bat speed and above average power.
The Cubs may be contemplating that these qualities may help solve two problems....the need for a center fielder and also a lead off hitter.

WRIGLEY FIELD BEING PACKED IN STYROFOAM FOR ITS BIG MOVE TO THE SUBURBS!
Don't worry.  The park is staying right where it is.  But TWO renovation projects are on the schedule.  One is a definite go and the other is being considered.  They are both safety issues.
First, all netting at Wrigley will be extended to make things safer for fans.  Many ball parks are doing the same thing.
The second one might be a bit difficult to swallow for true blue Cubbie fans.  Major League baseball might INSIST that all the outfield walls be padded.   This is a tough one to pan out.  Can you imagine Wrigley without the ivy?

Picture
CHICAGO CUB REFUSES TO WEAR UNIFORM!
That's because when you're a REAL Cub bear THEY CAN'T MAKE YOU!   Don't even try!
This little guy appeared at the old Wheeghman Park before it was re-named Wrigley field in 1916.  I guess you could say a bear played in the ball field before the CHICAGO CUBS.
Observing the fans in the stands, I wish I was around to operate a straw hat kiosk!
Our Chicago Cubs mascot Clark and the little bear in the photo have something in common.  They both refuse to wear pants!

Picture
           YU BETTER BELIEVE HE'S   STAYING!
At least that's what Mr. Darvish would like.  "I'm feeling comfortable right where I am!", says Yu.  "My kids and my wife love Chicago and want to stay.  The kids love the Cubbies."
With three years left on his contract and with the fact that he had a strong second half of the season in 2019, he could become a real asset to the club, despite his rough beginnings.  Time will tell!

BEFORE WE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS FOR A SHORT WHILE...HERE ARE A FEW THOUGHTS TO PONDER!
Every member of Cubs World has been blessed.  In recent years we have seen a miracle called the World Series.
When we were kids in our pajamas we said our prayers before bed and then tried to dream of our heroes such as Ernie Banks or Billy Williams.        We always took joy in returning home after school, hoping that the Cubs would still be on television chasing the afternoon shadows.  Mr. Banks loved double headers and so did I!!
Then we grew up to visit Wrigley whenever we could.  A few of us became bleacher bums and lived to tell about it.
We witnessed the ups and downs of each team.  We loved them no matter what.  We will continue to do so forever!
As Thanksgiving approaches followed by Christmas and New Years, we wish everybody health and happiness.  Although there will be no membership meeting or newsletter in December, we will still be hard at work preparing for the 2020 season with more BASEBALL FUN FACTS, interesting trivia and information about this wonderful club called CUBS WORLD.
....AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!
