" If you build it, they will come", "Ease his pain"," Go the distance" SPOILER ALERT !
These are phrases that Shoeless Joe Jackson uttered that only Ray Kinsella could hear. Except , of course, for Terrence Mann later in the movie along with the 66 Cubs World members that were in attendance at the Old Mill Playhouse the night of January 6th, 2025.
In an event that was totally out of the club's box, Cubs World treated their membership to a private showing of possibly the greatest sports movie ever made, the fantasy classic, "Field of Dreams". Even the concessions were bought at a very reasonable price , getting a suitcase full of popcorn and a beverage.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely to the movie that some of us have seen 3 or 4 times. Many, many thanks to Wayne Richards for his great idea and reminding us how important this game that we love so much, is ingrained in us.
James Earl Jones, we play your soliloquy every season to thank you for yours and our passion of the game!

CUBS FANS SHOULD REJOICE!
by Wayne Richards
Since 1996, the voice of Pat Hughes has graced the radio airwaves as well as television on occasion. For decades his powerful broadcast skills have echoed his passion for the Cubbies, along with his side kick, Ron Coomer.
Both of these giant talents have signed extensions to continue calling games for the men in blue! I am very excited about this news, but maybe for a bit of a strange reason.
Although these gentlemen will be heard on Sports Radio 670, just hearing them banter back and forth reminds me of the old WGN days. I don't know about you, but I miss them like crazy!
I'm sure we all remember the time Pat spent with Ron Santo in the booth. If you crave the memory of hearing these two in what people affectionately called the 'PAT AND RON SHOW", there is a way to do it!
Pat Hughes has produced a series of cds entitled, BASEBALL VOICES. Each beautifully pieced together volume pays tribute to individual on air talent such as BOB COSTAS, BOB EUCKER, VIN SCULLY and of course, HARRY CAREY!

Last evening, as I was finishing up my piece on Pat Hughes, a Facebook post popped up announcing his death. It was a very official looking graphic and by-line. It was completely bogus!
I checked many sources and discovered, much to my delight, that he is very much still with us. Thank God!

UNSUNG HEROES
by Dan Marx
When our club was in its infancy in March of 2017, there were about 16 members in our first exploratory meeting. All of us spread the word as well as we could throughout The Villages. Putting Cubs World cards on golfcart steering wheels. Talking to people getting out of cars with Illinois license plates, and approaching people with Cubs t-shirts, etc. And some of us still do this to spread the word.
But, we realized that the best way to spread the word to the masses was to let the media help us do that. We were extremely fortunate that one of the Daily Sun's sports reporters at the time was Cody Hills.
Cody is from Iowa, and a monstrous Cubs fan. It was his article in the spring of 2017 that put Cubs World on the map.
Both the Cubs and Clemson football had won a national championship for the first time in years. So Cody had an interview with Dave Gran and myself, and a Clemson fan, and put this story on the front page of the FRONT section for all to see. I would dare to say that we probably picked up close to 50 new members within the first few days of that article. We had over 100 members for our very first meeting in June of 2017.
Cody put story after story that we furnished him in the paper, and made sure that everyone in The Villages realize what a special club we are. And, of course, with his special insight into the Cubs was the featured speaker at our meeting every April to kick off the baseball season.
When Cody left the Daily Sun over a year ago, along came Sylaisha Taylor who has quickly become a friend of Cubs World. She can not wait for us to feed stories to her, and make sure that they get published. We do hope that Sylaisha will attend one of our meetings, and we will all be able to thank her in person for all of her efforts on our behalf.
Our accomplishments are many that we can always be proud of. There are many of unsung heroes within our club. But, I wanted to make sure that all members understood that the ongoing efforts of our unsung Daily Sun reporters help us to remain one of the strongest clubs in The Villages.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR US?
by Wayne Richards
Thousands of "DIE HARD" Cubs fans will soon be converging on the annual CUBS CONVENTION in Chicago. The Sheraton Grand Hotel is hosting the festivities and although it is a very expensive ticket, thousands will be there!
Its always fun to meet and greet the legends and usual suspects every year. But this year, more than ever, the discussion will be focusing on how well the Cubs will do with the changes they've made.
For an informed and interesting glance into what the future may hold for the Cubbies, please check out this entertaining and informative video! CLICK HERE

FROM THE PREZ'S DESK
by Wayne Richards
I am and always will be a very transparent soul. Here I am typing away on a piece for the Chatter while my editor, Dan Marx, fact checks.
Oh. Who are we kidding? Thats not really us. First of all, I don't wear ties ...EVER!!!!! Secondly, that's not Dan's phone.
So...in the interest of honesty, the next photo features my ACTUAL DESK! Talk about transparency!

So...in the interest of honesty, the next photo features my ACTUAL DESK! Talk about transparency!
Here is the real desk! It's filled with clippings, notes, bills, pens that don't work half the time, a printer that is slower than molasses in January, Ron Santo standing in the corner for inspiration, my Cubs World workbook crammed with all kinds of goodies, a Cubs Calendar and a cell phone that won't stop ringing!
That's exactly how a prez's desk should be! A lot of those notes contain information about future guests we plan to invite as Cubs World continues to grow.
Please remember gang....our next two membership meetings will be held at Eisenhower Recreation Center. If you can, come a little early , spend some time exploring the amazing artifacts displayed throughout the building! It is truly a special place!
