HAPPY JULY CUBS WORLD!!!!!!
Here's hoping everyone had an amazing, spectacular, exciting and....above all...meaningful holiday! Some people traveled. Some people stayed home and grilled. Other's hit the road or the beach.
For many Floridians shooting off fireworks is mandatory! It just HAS TO BE DONE! Back in Streamwood, a suburb of Chicago, a large percentage of homes belonged to veterans and even though the sale of fireworks are prohibited in Illinois, these brave men and women of the armed services drove to either Wisconsin or Indiana to buy sky rockets that rivaled those exploded at large venues. In fact, one year I think they launched something nuclear!
It's best to keep the little critters inside. Our neighborhood in the Villages is going to the dogs! Cats too I guess.
Of course, with the ALL STAR BREAK, baseball is very much on our minds. Perhaps the Cubbies will re-focus and find the energy and forward momentum needed to bring a positive light on our beloved men in blue. TIME WILL TELL!!!!!
Welcome to the July edition of the Cubs World Chatter!

SAM IS A-COMIN!
by Wayne Richards
Last January, Sam McDowell was scheduled to kick off our 2024 season with a visit to our membership meeting. But, due to an accident he had to bow out.
But he is now riding the waves of a book tour and very much looking forward to sharing stories. After all, "Sudden Sam" is considered to be one of the greatest ball players of all time and he has a 'LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" to prove it.
You will discover just how impressive his playing was, but what is even more important is the incredible counseling work he does to help others.
Do NOT miss this opportunity to meet a man who has been designated to be one of the top 9 pitchers in history!

MORE FROM OUR EDITOR Dan Marx!!!!
(NOTE FROM WAYNE RICHARDS)...Dan Marx does not play golf in a suit. But he'd make a great television color commentator...don't you think?)
This is one of the meetings that many of us have been looking forward to. A number of us have been lucky enough to have seen Sam at one of our very first meetings as a club . He talked about his very illustrious career as a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians and other teams in the 1960s and 1970s.
He’s a big imposing man, and because of that he was one of the most successful strikeout pitchers of his time. Between 1965-1970 he led the league in strikeouts 5 times.
His playing career was outstanding , but Sam thinks about how great it could have been if he wasn’t a raging alcoholic. Once Sam retired, his increased drinking cost him his marriage. He lost his kids too, and was desolate and broke. Eventually, Sam moved back to his parents home in Pittsburgh and checked into a rehab facility there. As Sam started to turn his life around, he went to the University of Pittsburgh and earned associate degrees in sports psychology and addiction. Then McDowell returned to the majors as a sports addiction counselor for the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. Sam also works as a consultant with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.
Sam has a remarkable story to tell us all, and to let us know that athletes are human beings and have the same vulnerabilities as we all do. Sam went through a part of his life that had a profound effect on him, and he made a commitment to help professional athletes have a better chance of fighting alcoholism and drug abuse.

THE ONE AND ONLY BLEACHER BUM REPORT!!!!!!!!
by Jack Herbon
It hasn’t been the best years for Cubs fans as the major league team has underperformed and a handful of high end prospects have struggled. There have been some bright spots and overall the top of their rankings boast a talented group of future big league regulars. If you think this season has been bad for the Cubs just take a quick peek at the White Sox standings. Yikes!
The trading deadline is fast approaching and that means new faces will soon be seen playing at Wrigley for the last half of the season. Here are my four picks for the young Cubs that will make a big difference in the future. These names are in no particular order.
Alexander Canario CHC, OF, – Canario returned from ankle and shoulder surgeries in mid June, and by the time he got back to Triple-A he looked mostly like himself, slashing .276/.342/.524 with 8 homers and a 28%/9.3% K%/BB% in 36 games. He swings the bat like it’s a bazooka.
Moises Ballesteros CHC, C, Bellesteros, this young catcher is small but powerfull. He's the typer of player that has been surprising the scouts for a couple of years now. This is the kind of catcher that can solidify a much needed spot for the Cubs. Ballesteros is just chillin in corner waiting to get his fair due.
Jefferson Rojas CHC, 2B/SS, – If Rojas was a barely 18 year old in full season ball and he more than held his own, slashing .268/.345/.404 with 7 homers, 13 steals, and a 19.9%/7.5% K%/BB% in 70 games at Single-A. This kid is a hustler that plays hard no matter what level he is on. I see him as a CAN'T miss prospect!
Haydn McGeary, at age 24, is getting a bit long in the tooth to be a true prospect. The Glendale, AZ native was drafted by the Cubs in 2022, in the 15th round (No. 443 overall), from Colorado Mesa University, where he won a LOT of honors. He’s a lifetime .274/.390/.455 hitter in 503 minor league at-bats, between Myrtle Beach and South Bend. He’s hit 20 home runs and driven in 99, and while his strikeouts are a bit high at 139 (around 28 percent), he’s not afraid to accept his walks (89).
Feel free to cut this out and place it on your fridge and see if this "Swami" is correct! Go Cubs.

A REPORT FROM OUR GOOD FRIEND GARY KOCA
by Dan Marx
On Tuesday, June 25, CubsWorld member Gary Koca and former member Bill McMahon participated in an event in the northwest suburbs of Chicago highlighted by the appearance of over a dozen members of the 1984 division-winning Chicago Cubs. The event, sponsored by www.Club400Cubs.com.,allowed Cub fans from as far away as Central Indiana a chance to relive the 1984 season and meet some of their favorite Cubs. Cub400Cubs is an independent, non-profit charity that fosters a community of people looking to help others in times of great need. As an example, an event held by Club400Cubs.com in 2023 raised $75,000 for Special Olympics. The 2024 event likely raised even more.
The June 25, 2024 program was held at the home of club founder Stewart McVicar in far northwest suburban Lake in the Hills, Illinois that included a mammoth “fan cave” that held the most Chicago Cubs-related memorabilia that I have ever seen. This included a small theater that showed Cubs-related films, trophies, uniforms of Cub players, and a variety of other items all related to our Chicago Cubs. Over 200 people attended this event, which included tents serving food, beverages, and the chance to get autographs from over a dozen former players and others with the team.
Because it was held two days after the ceremony unveiling the Ryne Sandberg statue at Wrigley Field, we were hoping that Ryno might be able to attend. Though he could not make it, many others from that 1984 team that fell one victory short of making it to the World Series, were able to attend. These attendees included Bobby Dernier, Jody Davis, Leon Durham, Steve Trout, Richie Hebner, Rich Bordi, and Chuck Rainey, as well as noteworthy Cub fan Ronny Woo Woo, plus Bob Ibach and Tony Garofalo (both of whom appeared at the March 2024 CubsWorld meeting), as well as singer Wayne Messmer and ball girl Marla Collins, a favorite of Harry Carey’s, to be sure.
Everyone there had a great time, plus it raised a good amount of money for really needy charitable causes. We are looking forward to another one in the summer of 2025!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
by Wayne Richards
Here is a two part question for Cubs World. First, did you happen to be watching the Cubs game when the first "all womens" Cubs anchor team displayed their skills on the air? Secondly, How do you think they did? Congrats to Taylor Mcgregor, Elise Menaker and Beth Mowins for making some long overdue history at Wrigley!

BREWER PUNCHES WALL...WALL REFUSES TO PUNCH BACK!
by Wayne Richards
First of all, anyone on the Cubs roster named Brewer means trouble! What was he thinking when he punched a hole in the wall? What did the wall ever do to him?
Of course, we've seen this before. Remember Carlos Zambrano? He punch out a Gator-ade machine, along with a few other ball players in his day. Actually, when you look at teams across the years, there have been many individuals who have demonstrated a need for anger management.

DETERMINATION
by Wayne Richards
On what began as a beautiful Friday afternoon for baseball, the Leesburg Lightning took on the Sanford River Rats in a make up game due to incliment weather from the night before. In the sixth inning, the heavens opened and everything stopped. Lightning flashes officially halted the action.
Meanwhile, a group from Cubs World converged upon the tiny and crowded CHICAGO FIRE restaurant, complete with Vienna products and a hint of home, courtesy of the owner who hales from Chicago.
Meanwhile, speaking of hail, an ice pellet or two hit our windshield as Annie and I raced to the ball field to meet up with our special guest, Kyle Farnsworth. Upon arrival, the rain stopped and we parked in a semi muddy field to rendezvous at the front gate.
I think everyone in Cubs World should know that Kyle loves us. It's nice to have a real Chicago Cub to play with. It would've been fun to watch the reaction of the catcher had that moment materialized. He is a class act as I'm sure everyone can tell.
But, the rain got heavier. People started folding chairs, packing cushions and grabbing their kids to leave.
However, I noticed one lone gentleman waiting for some kind of action to resume. The rain fell progressively harder as the minutes ticked away.
Then, it happened! The final SHOCKER of the evening! A large ozone-splitting bolt of lightning hit the outfield followed by a deafening crescendo of thunder. Jim Guleserian said to me, "That scared the ---- out of me!" But obviously not as bad as some poor guy who ran out of the stadium without his shoes!
BULLETIN.....
Our visit to see the Lightning play has been re-scheduled for Saturday the 20th of July. Actually, this may be the last game of their very short season...so please register via our web site. Admission...as always...is free. Kyle Farnsworth will be checking his schedule to see if he can join us again.
The address for the Pat Thomas Stadium is 240 BallPark Rd. in Leesburg.

AN A-MAYS-ING LEGEND!
by Wayne Richards
About six years ago my wife and I traveled southbound to the Villages. We wanted to visit someone along the way, so we drove via Montgomery rather than struggle through the pure hell that is Atlanta.
We stayed at a nice hotel resplendent with bisquit signs everywhere. My first thought was, "Wow....they must make great bisquits around here. It took me a while to discover that they are a very popular baseball enterprise with a wonderful ball park! It was a field once used by the NEGRO LEAGUE.....the same one in which Willie he honed his skills.
Willie Howard Mays was born on May 6th, 1931 in Westfield Alabama. It wasn't long before Willie began to display his skills as an all around athlete.
By 1948, he was playing with the Black Barons of the Negro American League. By the time he graduated high school in 1950, he was playing for the MLB with the Giants. By 1951, Mays won ROOKIE OF THE YEAR. After all, he hit 20 home runs to help the Giants win their first pennant in 14 years!
In 1957, Willie recorded at least 26 doubles, 20 triples, 35 homers and 38 stolen bases.
In total, he hit 660 career home runs, earned 12 golden gloves, a 24 ALL STAR standing and became a first-ballot Hall Of Fame inductee.
Willie Mays left an amazing impact on the game of baseball and for that, we should all be grateful!

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Well...here we are! Its ALL STAR break time! Let me start off by asking a question of my dear Cubs World members. Which do you prefer more...the HOME RUN DERBY or THE ALL STAR GAME? Or...do you care at all?
I have no idea how the second half of the season will go for us on the ball field. But, as far as events are concerned, we have some nice things booked for you!
In August, the long awaited and highly anticipated visit from "SUDDEN SAM" Mcdowell will take place.
Following Sam in September, Franz Beard will delight us with his facts and figures about players. He has pretty much recovered from his injuries. He is excited about speaking to us.
One new thing we will be doing is to present an occasional presentation via ZOOM. Some of the guests we're seeking for future scheduling cannot travel. But they are willing to join us via technology.
One such individual will be SUE ZIPAY, one of the original Rockford Peaches! This will take place in October. In addition to our on-line treat, we will be informed and entertained by Gary Koca who has informed me that he has a very special powerpoint presentation about the Peaches. (By the way...Gary has a new book out and we will announce what it is at the membership meeting.
Then, to round out the year before the December break, we're going to examine the world of umpires. As you know, if you've been following games this season, the umpires have made some big time controversial discussions. Joining us will be the head umpire of high school and college operations in Florida, Logan Brown. Just to make it really interesting, he will be bringing a panel of top umpire students to discuss what goes into creating talented professional umps.
By the way, just so you know, you can keep in touch with CUBS WORLD not only via the Chatter, but also on our web site and FACEBOOK PAGE!
I also would like people to know that we are in need of someone within our club with camera and/or video skills. We will bring this up at the next membership meeting.
I also would like to extend all our members an invitation to join us for a board meeting! They are held at Colony Cottage every third Monday of the month. If you're interested in attending, please contact me at [email protected].
So...in the meantime let us all hope for a more positive second half. May the Cubs find a way to improve. May all our booked guests remain healthy. AND THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO!!!!!
GO CUBBIES!!!!!
