CUBS WORLD JUST KEEPS ROLLING ALONG!!!
Lately, Cubs World has been capturing the attention of Villagers! We've been getting nice notices in the Daily Sun and soon will be recognized in the Villages Magazine!
Even the Villages official baseball team in the Florida league considered naming themselves the Cubs instead of the Bison. Oh well...it is what it is.
As for the Cubs themselves, even with health issues, they're doing well. We have much to be grateful for. GO CUBBIES!

In Brownwood Florida there is a familiar and very popular sports bar called Gators. It has been the official home for Cubs World Watch Parties for as long as I can remember. Of course, I can't even remember what I had for breakfast.
In any case, on Saturday, May 23rd, our Cubs World family will gather around 1:30. If you've never been to one of our parties, you should join us!
The food is great! There are games to play run masterfully by our good friend Sam Pagoria who is extremely good at what he does and should be in Vegas doing sports book. As for the Cubs game, there are so many televisions around you just might get a suntan!
GATORS is located at 3698 Meggison Rd. You can't miss it! Well, you can if you want but why would you do that?
You'll be greeted at the front door by Mr. Gator. Actually, the thought just occurred to me that he might actually have a name! I'll have to ask management.
I really don't know much about him except one thing. He seems to like chewing wood and doesn't really say much. So, I suppose a Chatter interview might be a bit difficult.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING REPORT

60 Cubs World members gathered at Colony Rec Center 5/4 for our May monthly membership meeting. Unlike recent Zoom meetings, this meeting featured two local speakers. The meeting started with the pledge and the National Anthem, and then a wonderful dinner of bourbon chicken catered by Golden Corral.
Our featured speaker is a tremendous friend of the club, Cody Hills. And our other speaker was a very dynamic coach, Tommy Bond, who is the head high school baseball at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala.

Tommy had another chapter in his life which has had a profound impact on his life and hopefully a big impact on Cubs World. After graduating from high school as a pitcher, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He decided to go to University of Florida instead where he became teammates with former MLB player, David Eckstein and a guy by the name of David Ross. Ross, of course, hit a big homer in the 7th game of the 2016 World Series, and managed the Cubs for 4 years in the early 2020s. It looks like Wayne, our Prez, has pulled a big coup and will get Rossy to speak via Zoom to us later in the year.
And then, of course, there’s Cody Hills. It’s been well documented how Cody’s press coverage of our humble beginnings as a club, has helped put Cubs World on the map. He really enjoys coming to talk with us every season, and he put a tremendous amount of research into making a slide presentation to make us all smarter as Cubs fans. Cody even gave us a statistic as to how effective they have been using the new ABS system this year.
Cody is extremely bullish on the Cubs this season. He looks at our team this year and he sees how our starting pitching has been decimated, he looks at our no name bullpen and then is astounded how we’re doing all of this without PCA making a big contribution this year. THE IMPORTANCE OF A GREAT YEAR!

I was 6 years of age in 1957. It was about the time when a few of my brain cells decided to activate and as a result, I became emotionally attached to the littlest of things. A simple Tootsie roll made me feel joyful. Music was entering my life at full force thanks to WLS.
The sound of the el train thundered through the Rogers Park air near the Morse Avenue station. Our brownstone was about a block and a half away.
I was crazy about trains and anytime we had the opportunity to ride the red line to the loop made me smile (except for the times we got off at Bryn Mawr to see the doctor). This passion for the rails continued when we moved to the burbs in a single-family home right next to the Skokie Swift! It literally ran right next to us!
Meanwhile, my paternal grandfather lived in the back of a tailor shop on Grace Street in the Lake View area. On one particular visit, I was told we were going to a ball game.
Now it should be known that at age three, somebody put me in a little ball players outfit and stuck me along a tall wooden fence to take a photo. But baseball did not fill my life like trains.
But there I was a few years later walking up to a place called Wrigley Field accompanied by dad and Grandpa. They scored some pretty damned good seats. Of course, with a record of 62-92, anybody could afford decent tickets. Even a frosty malt only cost a dime!
Walking into the front entrance of Wrigley, I was a bit disoriented by the rush of the crowd and the sound of a man shouting out, "Program! Get your program here!"
We walked up a few steps until daylight returned. I suddenly stopped dead in my tracks at first glance of the "friendly confines". I was in shock! The colors, the smells and the sounds all penetrated my heart and soul immediately!
A couple of memorable things happened that day. First, Grandpa Herman was dead set on shoving a Blatz down my throat. He was an immigrant from Moscow and insisted, "When I was a boy, I drank vodka when I was Wayne's age! Let the boy have a taste!" So, when the vendor carrying a little fridge on a strap walked down the aisle, Herman called to him.
I must say it tasted vile! But I washed it down with a hot dog trying not to laugh at the sound of Pat Piper's stadium announcements. I don't know why, but the sound of his voice made me laugh out loud. Obviously, I was easily amused.
I also remember quite vividly the sound of the crowd cheering due to a big win! However, there was no singing "GO CUBS GO" since it hadn't been written yet. Besides, Steve Goodman was only a few years older than me.
Up in the broadcast booth, a gentleman by the name of Jack Brickhouse was calling the game for WGN television. Little did I know that one day I would have breakfast with him.

I thought it would be fun to look back in Chicago Cubs history and look at two items. Streaks and No Hitters. First the streaks the Cubs have been in. First the good:

- Multiple No-Nos: Ken Holtzman (1969, 1971) and Jake Arrieta (2015, 2016) each threw two. First African-
- American Pitcher: "Toothpick" Sam Jones recorded a no-hitter in 1955 against the Pirates.
- Last Individual at Wrigley: Milt Pappas threw the last individual no-hitter at Wrigley Field on September 2, 1972
- I joined the US Navy after the 1969 season and that no hitter by Hotzman was a big deal that year.
- No doubt you diehards will remember:

1. I think it is safe to say that the CENTRAL DIVISION of the National League is just about as strange as the weather. Just days ago, it was reported that the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates and Cardinals are all over 500! This is CRAZY!
2. Why do food vendors in the East carry cases over their heads rather than using shoulder straps?
3. Is it possible that eating at Wrigley or the Pump Room costs about the same?
4. Why should we care how fast a ball flies off a bat? When I'm in a plane I don't care how fast take off speed is. I'm more impressed with the fact that we got up in the air!
5. When will fans get a chance to use ABS?
6. The Wrigley grounds keepers are the best in the world!
7. The folks flying around in the old Wrigley score board could easily get work with Cirque Du Soleil!
8. So far in 2026, Wrigley has hosted a goose, two cats and one rat! No goats.
9. The MLB FULL PACKAGE is a great investment!
