NOVEMBER IS HERE!
It sure arrived quickly...didn't it? In November, most people now turn their attention to football. But...unless you can find an Autumn or Winter baseball league down here somewhere, one can only enjoy focusing on next season for the Cubbies.
I really think some interesting developments will be taking place during the "off season". I know for a fact that the Cubs World board is working on some great events for 2025! STAY TUNED!!!!

RED WORD ANYONE?
by Wayne Richards
Those of you out there who spent time searching for a RED WORD in the last edition of the CUBS WORLD CHATTER had difficulty finding it. Thats because it wasn't anywhere to be found.
Unfortunately, you were on the receiving end of a technical glitch. It happens. So, in light of this issue, we encourage everyone to simply place their names on a piece of paper and drop it in our special jar for a drawing If we have another mis-hap at a future Membership meeting. You just might win a gift card from Publix! PLEASE NOTE....THE SAME RED WORD WILL APPEAR IN BOTH THE NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER EDITION OF THE CHATTER.

BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Herbon
Well. the Cubs finished the season four games over 500 with a record of 83-79. Which was also the exact same record as our enemy to the south the St. Louis Cardinals also finished with. So we can actually say we finished in second place ten games behind our enemy to the north the Milwaukee Brewers. Ouch, what happened to the Brewers in the playoffs? That must have really stung having a great season like that and then getting bounced early in the playoffs.
I wonder what the Las Vegas odds were before this season if you bet the best pitcher on the Cubs would be from Japan and the hitter with the best batting average was also from Japan? 500-1 at least is what I would imagine. But, Shota Imanaga is in fact the best pitcher they had this year. Nobody saw that coming.
Seiya Suzuki who played in the outfield was brought in before the 2022 season. Suzuki has had a successful 2024 season which also included a stay on the injury list. The rest of the Cubs players to be honest had average to below average statistics.
If you had one story to follow this off season I would have you focus on this story. The Cubs are once again looking to Japan for some help with their pitching staff. His name is Roki Sasaki a cagy righthander with some crazy pitches that he must have learned while playing a pachinko machine. His breaking ball is amazing and at just 23 years old is considered at this moment the best pitcher in the world at this age! The Cubs have been hoping that he would become available and now he is. I think with the other two Japanese players already on the team this will certainly help the Cubs efforts to sign him.

As mentioned in Jack Herbon's report, this amazing pitcher might be a prospect for the Chicago Cubs. There is going to be a flurry of activity from many teams to acquire him.
Here is a little video you might find interesting explaining why everyone is observing him very carefully.

NOVEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING FILLED WITH GREAT FOOD AND HUMOR!
by Dan Marx
Our November membership meeting was action packed right up until exactly 9:00 PM.
Everything started off deliciously, celebrating a Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, and peach cobbler ( with whipped cream, of course). Then we got down to business.
Our board of directors is made up of 4 officers, 10 total directors. Our officers are voted on every other year. Those up for vote this year are Sharon Adochio and Terrence Burke. After an outstanding 5 years as our Treasurer, Sharon has stepped down, and Sam Pagoria has agreed to take over her position. Thank you and welcome Sam.
Terrence is staying on as Vice President, and Dan Marx, Jim Guleserian, Debi Orchard, Chuck Lindsoe, Rick Baas, Angela Burke, and are still at large directors.
Barb Beil and Wayne Richards both have one year left on their terms. All were elected by unanimous consent.
Jim Guleserian had his always entertaining and informative Let’s Play Too. We touched briefly on the state of the Cubs, and then Jim took us through his slide show of his 25 hour day traveling to Washington DC for his honor flight. Jim was basically awestruck throughout his trip as were we. There were at least 6 or 7 times where Jim told us of heartwarming moments that he will never forget.
Jim was able to go to Arlington National Cemetery, and in a very rare occurrence witness a wreath laying. He saw the White House, the Jefferson Memorial, the Pentagon, and his buddy Abe at the The Lincoln Memorial. It was a 10 minute show, and we were all mesmerized. Jim got a well deserved heartfelt standing ovation.
Then it was showtime. There were three umpires in the house, and we went from the mechanical issues of the job to the execution of those mechanics at the highest level.
Logan Brown , who is now the superintendent of schools for Sumter County, was teaching an umpire training school and umpiring at lower levels throughout Central Florida . He is one of 100 umpires throughout the area. Logan umpires about 120 games a year. Logan found about Cubs World through Kyle Farnsworth.

His student, Rob Minter also spoke, and was telling us he went through a 5 week training course. He has been umpiring for 6 years now. He is famous for ejecting a 6year old. They both took questions afterwards, and Logan told us a funny story about how he ended up ejecting half of a stadium.
FACTOID EXTRA...
MLB umpires have a host of pregame duties, but nothing is more important in baseball than, well, the baseball. And each game's home-plate umpire, who is also known as the umpire-in-chief, is the "sole judge of the fitness of the balls to be used in the game," according to the league's official rulebook.
It is that umpire's job to inspect each of the baseballs supplied by the home team to make sure it meets regulation standards and has been rubbed properly so as to remove any gloss. The umpire must also verify that the home team has enough regulation balls in reserve to replace those that are taken out of play, and they must be in possession of at least two reserve balls at all times during a game.

Our next speaker was Rocky Roe. Rocky is a very funny man who wasn’t happy until we booed him at his introduction.
He started umpiring in April of 1976 at the high school level. He then went to ump in the Florida State league, where he threw out Jim Leyland on his very first night.
3 years later, he graduated to the majors, the fastest rise for any umpire ever. He would have started earlier that year, but that was the strike year, and he refused to be a scab when asked to ump . But he did finish the year later after the strike was over.
He told us some great stories about managers that he threw out. You can imagine some of the most colorful managers back then. There was Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, and Lou Pinella just to name a few.
He told a cute story about how George Brett flattered him in the first few months of his career. Brett asked him “ how’s my favorite umpire?” Rocky fell for that line, until every umpire in his crew said that they were also told the same thing by Brett. One of Rocky’s memorable quotes was “ Cleveland was the only stadium where every fan had their own exit.”.
He did talk about compensation, and said that in 1978 umpiring AAA ball he netted $ 1500 for the season. But now umpires in the majors average about $160,000 , and crew chiefs average about $500,000!
I did ask him which pitcher had the best stuff he ever saw, and he mentioned Nolan Ryan, and for a closer, Dennis Eckersley.
Please come back and visit us again Rocky . We loved the stories and the belly laughs.

A CHICAGO BEAR WHO IS A WINNER!
by Wayne Richards
When I was a young child, I was introduced to THANKSGIVING via the story of pilgrims and how they help found and develop this country. That was the scholastic indoctrination of course.
As years and decades have passed I have grown to realize that this holiday has a much deeper meaning. It really is about giving thanks for the wonderful things I have in life.
Better yet, a greater joy and sense of satisfaction comes from giving to others! I think this is the very best quality a human...or a bear can exhibit.
Cubs charities, just as they do every Fall, distributes meals to needy families throughout Chicago. However, this year something amazing has occurred. Many of Clark the bear's friends are lending a hand...or is it a paw or a claw?
Mr. Met helped load cars and trucks along with Orbit and Wally the Green Monster! As it turns out, visiting mascots aren't necessarily bad guys, girls...or whatever! The spirit of charativeness should resonate around the world!
Cubs Charities have certainly expanded their efforts. The Cubs have embraced the NATIONAL RUNAWAY SAFELINE, which provides help to at risk youth who are homeless.
As far as the Cubbies are concerned, a number of players are deeply involved in programs. Kyle Hendricks has helped develop a scholar's program. Ian Happ is donating 300 pairs of batting gloves for the CUBS JR. ALL STARS.
Patrick Wisdom has pitched in with funds while other Cub players who will be remaining here for the Winter plan to work with charities all the way until Spring.
Everyone involved with these efforts display the best of humanity...HELPING OTHERS!

2024 BLOOPER COLLECTION

You can't hide from them! I am speaking of those unintended indiscresions occasionally commited by professional players. These little incidents have been captured forever!
While many of these moments might cheer us up, some of the players will never live them down. Take a look and you'll see what I mean. Have fun!

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE!
by Wayne Richards
I would like to assure all Cubs World members that our board never displays any disharmony. That is why I think it would be a very pleasurable experience volunteering and join us in the process of keeping CUBS WORLD alive and ticking!
Here's how you can help.
If you are experienced in tax preparation or know somebody locally who is, please contact us. Everything is up to date and properly filed and that's the way we wish to keep it! We just want to stay ahead of the curve.
We are also looking for an individual who might be able to photograph or video our events. Here's an additional option for all our members. If you can remember, grab the phone out of your pocket or purse and take some photos once in a while and send them to us! In fact, I am contemplating having a "photo contest' for special prizes. I might just bring this up during our January meeting.
Our director of computer operations, Chuck Lindsoe, is an amazing computer whiz. But, he has informed me that he would welcome the assistance of anyone with similar interests. We need someone, in particular, who understands how to improve wireless. Please come and help us out.
Sam Pagoria is our new Treasurer replacing Sharon Adochio after years of very fine service. She will be missed.
Speaking of people that deserve attention, we will be passing out a couple of ALL STAR AWARDS as well as a special one after the first of the year. We're going about a new system for selecting and approving candidates....so please have patience.
As your president, I hope that everyone has been enjoying some of the changes we have made. We want to make everything more entertaining and meaningful for all.
LET ME SHARE SOMETHING WITH YOU! For some time now, I have been a strong proponent on developing a process where we feature guests via ZOOM or some other process. The reason is simple. We have the opportunity to acquire guests that cannot travel to join us in person.
For example, this March, we have scheduled a ZOOM session with the great Bobby Dernier for March. As much as he'd love to, he cannot travel to join us. So, if they can't join us, we'll join them!
One thing I do need to bring up is the fact that some events and guest appearances may bump up the fees a bit. We're only talking a few bucks but I feel it's important and necessary to inform you of this. Costs have risen!
An extremely important function of Cubs World is to embrace charity. We would like some suggestions
I've been president for about a year now and I promise to do my best to keep steering the Good Ship Cubs World in a positive direction. Thank you to all who continue to give me encouragement and compliments. HAPPY SAILING!

THIS IS SOMETHING NEW IN THE CHATTER!
It is important that communication lines are always open for our members who wish to express themselves on any given issue. That is why, from now on, we will provide everyone with an opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, recipes, suggestions, jokes, observations, stories, news...etc.
HERE IS SOMETHING TO PONDER!
One of our functions in Cubs World is to provide funds for charitable organizations every year. The board would like to hear some suggestions from our membership regarding whom funds might be distributed to. Are you involved with a charity? Let us know and we'll place it on our list for future consideration!
This is YOUR suggestion box! Feel free to use it!
