MEMBERSHIP MEETING WELL ATTENDED
by Dan Marx
Cubs world members almost filled the room at the Colony Rec Center. Monday night, March 4th to enjoy an evening of wonderful stories about some of our favorite Cub seasons of the 1980s.
We started off enjoying a delicious dinner from Golden Corral. Pulled pork, a broccoli cheddar dish, and cole slaw with the finishing touch being a cupcake for desert.

Then it was on to Let’s Play Too with Jim Guleserian. We were all treated to a tribute of our earliest babysitter, Jack Brickhouse. We were all glued to the tv watching him broadcast the adventures of our favorite team, the Cubbies. The tribute stirred many memories for all of us. Even though the Cubs were always near the bottom of the league, Jack never had a negative thing to say about the team. Actually, didn’t the Cubs invent the phrase “ wait til next year”?

After we all took the Cubs IQ test relating to Ernie Banks, we segued into the next version of “ Let’s play 2” , and that was in regards to our 2 featured speakers. For our first time ever, we had more than one speaker on the same night. The cool part was that both guys worked for the same team during the 1980s , and have been close friends for 45 years.
Bob Ibach, who spoke with us last year, was the Cubs public relations guy, and Tony Garrofolo was the Cubs trainer for 9 years. They were like a tag team playing off of each other. Sometimes they had different opinions on certain topics, but most times they couldn’t wait to tell us all the fun that the players had in the clubhouse and on the field.
Bob Ibach has this booming voice that could probably belt out a perfect “ LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE” at any time, related a story to us about how McDonalds had a major impact on how Ryne Sandberg became our Hall of Fame second baseman. One day, Bump Wills, our second baseman at the time, went to McDonalds before a game. He decided to hide his Big Mac in his back pocket, but the Cubs manager, Lee Elia, caught him chowing down on the burger. He benched Wills, put Sandberg at second base, and the rest is history.
Bob also related to us that when his dad was a young kid he was plating catch in a neighborhood in the Bronx. One of their neighbors was Lou Gehrig. Gehrig was kind enough to play catch with the youngster, and, lo and behold, Gehrig’s buddy, Babe Ruth drove up and joined in the game of catch.
Both Tony and Bob went back and forth reminiscing about the 1984 team, and how close they came to going to the World Series in 39 years. They both had the most wonderful experiences working for the Cubs over the years, and we were the fortunate ones whom they shared their stories with.

PREDICTIONS PLEASE!!!!
by Dan Marx and Wayne Richards
Cubs World has a very simple question for you. We invite each and every one of you to respond.
It's prediction time. By season's end, how many losses and wins will there be for our beloved Cubbies?
Don't be shy! By the way, don't be afraid to make any additional comments that might come to mind.

THE BLEACHER BUM REPORT
by Jack Hebron
Okay, now that Cody Bellinger has been signed and Matt Chatman is off the board its time to look into the future of the Cubs and the 2024 season. This offense is now pretty much set and all we need is what every team is looking for. Timely hitting, great pitching a true closer and of course we need the breaks to go our way!
Here is my prediction for the lineup. Starting at leadoff is Ian Happ in left field. Hoerner at 2nd base will bat second. Batting third will be Cody Bellinger and at cleanup will be our right fielder Suzuki. Christopher Morel will be the key this year is hitting in the fifth spot. Swanson at shortstop will be hitting in the sixthe spot. Our DH is still up the air but I think Michael Busch will get the nod here in a no pressure part of the lineup. Batting 8th is our catcher Gomes and at nine will be centerfielder Pete C Armstrong who will get called up very soon once the season gets underway.
Everyone loves predictions so here are mine! So I've put on my Swami turban and here we go.
Ian Happ will have a career year with a .270 batting average and 95 RBI but will not get his third gold glove.
#2 prediction will see Nico Horner strike out more but will have 50 stolen bases to go with his .288 average.
#3 Will see Bellinger smack out 33 dingers to go with his 112 RBI. He will also make the All Star team for this first time as a Cub.
#4 will see Christopher Morel leading the team with YES 44 home runs. We will also see one of his home runs land in the centerfield bleachers ABOVE the concession stand. Were talking Roberto Clemente territory with this one.
#5 Danby Swason is the hitter that will surprise everyone this year. Last year he was just ordinary but this year he will increase his averge by 30 points!
#6 prediction will see a NO HITTER in a game from a pitcher we lease expect. The starter will be a rookie called up in August and he will throw it on the exact date as the Kenny Hotzman's no hitter in 1969.
#7 will see Taylor Swift singing the 7th inning stretch from the broadcast booth to a surprised crowd of 41,000 fans in September.
#8 Our new Cub manager Craig Counsell will be tossed out of the game 7 times this year. In Milwaukee he took a early shower 28 times as the Brewers manager.
#9 Our closer will be Adbert Alzolay, who to the surprise of many secretly learned the split finger fastball from a long distant relative of Bruce Sutter. Opposing teams will cry that Alzolay is using vasoline or scuffing the ball with a hidden piece of sandpaper. And finally at #10 will see the Cubs in the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Cubs who were down THREE GAMES TO NONE, will storm back to win the final four games. This game 7 will be at Wrigley Field. And after a 17 MINUTE power outage in the tenth inning due to a faulty transformer on Clark Street the Cubs will win the game and the Series!
Print this out now and open in October! The Swami is now putting away his crystall ball.

WHY WE LOVE BASEBALL
by Dan Marx
In my book “Why we love baseball”, I’m going back to 1954 to relate a story of someone you probably have never heard of. I found it pretty intriguing. The ball player was a man known as PonderousJoe Bauman. During the day he worked at a Texaco gas station that he owned , and at night he hit booming home runs in the Longhorn League. The altitude was high, the scores were high, ( many times 30 to 40 runs combined), and always lots of home runs. The fun part was that many of the fans would stick dollar bills through the chicken wire fence for the longest homers.
At the age of 19, Joe signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but immediately after that, he went to war. When he came back he played in Amarillo, and had 48 homers in his first year. Needless to say, he pocketed many dollar bills through the fence, and was able to buy a second car.
In 1949, the Braves offered him a contract so low , that he quit baseball and bought another gas station. In 1952 a doctor offered him a contract of $600 a month to play for the Drillers in Artesia, NM. The first year there, Bauman hit . 375 with 50 homers, and then 53 the next season. He was still making lots of money through the chicken wire. And then at the age of 32 he started playing for a team in Roswell where he bought another gas station.
He loved Roswell and their short right field fence. He started with 10 homers in his first 11 games, and had 20 homers a month into the season. On of his homers was so prodigious that it travelled 500 feet over the fence into a rodeo outside the stadium. On July 4th he hit his 36th homer, and people were beginning to wonder if he could hit the magic number of 70. The most homers in one season in the minors was held by 2 different players in 1933 and 1948. I always thought that it was Dick Stuart with 66.
By August 10th he hit his 54th home run and with 27 games left , people were beginning to wonder if he could hit 70. Pitchers were pitching around him. He was walked quite a bit. 21 days later, he had 64 home runs. He needed 6 homers in his last 7 games.
The last day in August , he hit 4 homers in one game, and things were looking much better. It was estimated that he collected $500 in fence money. On the last game of the season, he was back in Artesia for a double header. On his very first at bat he sent one out of the park for his 70th home run. He had such a great weight off of his shoulders that he hit 2 more in the second game, and finished the season with 72 home runs.
After that he played for 2 more seasons getting 63 homers, sold his gas stations, and went to work for a Budweiser beer distributorship.

SPRING TRAINING REPORT by Wayne Richards and Tony Diliberto (and of course Kathy!)
There is always excitement in the Arizona air when Spring training comes around. Sloan Park is a very special venue that echoes the sensibility and charm of Wrigley Field. Many things here remind us of the "temple of baseball " on Chicago's North side. The Vienna Hot Dog sign. The ornate and unique light poles. The familiar Wrigley sign.
Although the attendance has been decent so far, it probably is lagging a bit because prices have gone sky high! It should be better, particularly because the good ship CUBBIE has a new captain. There is high level of expectation regarding the manner in which he plans to navigate through a season. Sloan should be PACKED TO THE HILT!!!!!

My good friends Tony and Kathy Diliberto (originally from Chicago) live near Sloan Park and have been kind enough to share their thoughts and photos with Cubs World. This year is no different.
WAYNE: So tell me. Big crowd?
TONY: Decent.
WAYNE: What's the mood?
TONY: Right now...pretty good. We're tied in the bottom of the sixth.
IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE CUBS WERE PLAYING THE ANGELS. THE CUBS WON THE GAME BY THE SCORE OF 6-5.
WAYNE: Things still expensive there?
TONY: Yes! It's twelve bucks for a beer.
WAYNE: Such a deal!

WAYNE: Hows the weather?
TONY: It's ARIZONA!
It is important to note that I have had conversations with Tony when it was 124 degrees at his house. He appears to be Superman... always happy to experience the heat!
WAYNE: How are the Cubs looking?
TONY: I really like some of the rookies! They look good.
When I interviewed Tony, for some reason, I didn't realize I had the very game he attended on my tv.
NOTE.....Christina Mcgrath -Micari is another dear friend who is commited to sharing observations with Cubs World. She also is a powerhouse who, for some reason, always winds up taking photos with personalities (sports or otherwise.)
Due to the fact that she is attending a Spring training game after the March edition of the Chatter is released on the 15th, we will present her report in April.
Many thanks to these wonderful friends who honor me as well as Cubs World.

NEW VICE PRESIDENT AND HIS WIFE CARE DEEPLY ABOUT CUBS WORLD
by Wayne Richards
Terrence Burke is a very soft spoken individual. But he and his wife Angie are not shy when it comes to offering constructive criticism now that they’ve become Cubs World board members.
They say that a vice president traditionally works at the pleasure of the President. But I can freely admit that it is my pleasure to hear this man emote.
Both Terrence and Angie speak their minds and it is refreshing to experience such comments at board meetings.
I am always surprised to discover Cub fans that began their lives on the South side. Terrence attended St Bernard's high school, which according to current on line reports, is temporarily closed.
Our vice-president grew up with two brothers and two sisters. When Terrence was three years of age, they moved to Clark and Halsted.
But back in the day (I love that phrase) Burke took an interest in baseball, football and basketball. In particular, his love of baseball blossomed even more in Wrigley Field where, as a young man, he spent a fair amount of time going to games. How was this accomplished? Was our friend under the employ of the Cubs organization?
Well, in a round-about way perhaps. "After the game, some of us earned free passes for future games by helping to prepare the seats" said Terrence. "Sometimes on radio and television during an after game interview, you could hear the clicking and banging out there."
His college experience earned him a business degree as well as a law degree. Terrence put his skills to further use by coaching Basketball and Football.
Our new vice president also has a flair for improv, story telling and writing! As president, I'm proud to work with this man.
He and his wife moved to the Villages in 2022. She is an "AT LARGE" board member.
In the next edition of the Cubs World Chatter, we will feature Terrence and Angie Burke's connection to a wonderful organization called THE 400 CLUB. Stay tuned!

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
by Wayne Richards
As you might've noticed during the past couple of membership meetings, our good friend Jim Guleserien has taken the time to introduce our board members one by one during our membership meetings. It is fitting and proper to do this because I think we have a very special group of people tending to the needs of Cubs World. They work together to make our club a unique and shining experience for our members.
Despite the fact that I oversee a board of ten extraordinary people, we are always open to opinions and suggestions for Cubs World. You can contact me at [email protected] or call me at 630 390 4212.
OTHER NOTES......
I'm happy to see that our scheduled bus trip to St. Petersburg is fully booked! This promises to be a very enjoyable event.
By the way, if there is anybody out there with tax experience, please contact me. I have a quick question.....Cubs related of course.
In conclusion, here's hoping that 2024 turns out to be a meaningful and stimulating season. Don't forget to make your predictions about where the Cubs will wind up in the wins and losses totals.
